Intermediate Steering Shaft Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  Van/Car

Removal Procedure: 

  1. Disconnect the 12V Battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
  2. Remove Firewall Trim Cover. Refer to FIREWALL TRIM COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Remove Instrument Panel Under Tray (Driver). Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER TRAY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (DRIVER)
  4. Turn the steering wheel to ensure the wheels facing straight ahead

    Secure the steering wheel against turning after disconnecting the Intermediate Steering Shaft from the bottom of the steering gear or from the steering column 

  5. Remove 2 Screws (1) from the lower and upper universal joint.

    Torque: 33 Nm

  6. Pull off the Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) at the steering gear upwards in the direction of the arrow

  7. Pull off the Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) at the steering column downwards in the direction of the arrow.
  8. Unthread and remove the Intermediate Steering Shaft (1).

Installation Procedure:

Installation note: The Intermediate Steering Shaft can only be mounted in one position. 

The Intermediate Steering Shaft is coded to the steering column and the steering gear. 

  1. Position the Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) on the vehicle so that the screw fits in the groove of the steering column.

    Installation note: The Intermediate Steering Shaft can only be mounted in one position. 

    The Intermediate Steering Shaft is coded to the steering column and the steering gear. 

  2. Position the Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) on the vehicle so that the screw fits in the groove of the steering gear.
  3. Check the steering wheel is centered and the wheels are facing directly forward.
  4. Install Instrument Panel Under Tray (Driver). Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER TRAY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (DRIVER)
  5. Install Firewall Trim Cover. Refer to FIREWALL TRIM COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  6. Reconnect the 12V Battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
