Rear Window Defogger System does not Operate: Procedure

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body / Air Conditioner / Active Test.
    5. Perform the Active Test according to the display on the Techstream.
      AIR CONDITIONER (A/C AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY)

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Defogger Relay (Rear) Rear window defogger ON or OFF -

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      The window defogger system operates normally when operating it using the Techstream. A
      The window defogger system does not operate normally when operating it using the Techstream. B

    B → See step   5 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (LIN COMMUNICATION LINE) 
    1. Disconnect the A/C control assembly and A/C amplifier assembly connectors.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D37-22 (LIN1) - D59-3 (LIN1) Always Below 1 Ω
      D37-22 (LIN1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. REPLACE A/C CONTROL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the A/C control assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK WINDOW DEFOGGER OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON, press the rear window defogger switch, and check that the rear window defogger operates.

      OK

      Rear window defogger system operates normally.

    NG → See step   16 

    OK → END (A/C CONTROL ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE) 

  5. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body / Air Conditioner / Active Test.
    5. Perform the Active Test according to the display on the Techstream.
      AIR CONDITIONER (A/C AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY)

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Defogger Relay (Rear) Rear window defogger ON or OFF -
    6. Check that operation sound of the RR DEF relay is heard.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      Relay operating sound is not heard. A
      Relay operating sound is heard. B

    B → See step   10 

    A: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT RR DEF RELAY 
    1. Remove the RR DEF relay from the engine room relay block.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      (when battery voltage is not applied between terminals 1 and 2)
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      (when battery voltage is applied between terminals 1 and 2)
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 RR DEF Relay

    NG → REPLACE RR DEF RELAY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (RR DEF RELAY - BATTERY) 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Engine room R/B RR DEF relay terminal 1 - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 Engine Room Relay Block and Junction Block

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. REPLACE ENGINE ROOM RELAY BLOCK AND JUNCTION BLOCK 
    1. Replace the engine room relay block and junction block.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK WINDOW DEFOGGER OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON, press the rear window defogger switch, and check that the rear window defogger operates.

      OK

      Rear window defogger system operates normally.

    NG → See step   16 

    OK → END (ENGINE ROOM RELAY BLOCK AND JUNCTION BLOCK WAS DEFECTIVE) 

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NOISE FILTER - BATTERY) 
    1. Disconnect the noise filter connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      K15-1 - Body ground Ignition switch ON and rear window defogger switch on 11 to 14 V

    NG → See step   14 

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. INSPECT NOISE FILTER 
    1. Remove the noise filter.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 Always Below 1 Ω
      1 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 Component without harness connected
      (Noise Filter)

    NG → REPLACE NOISE FILTER 

    OK: Go to next step 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NOISE FILTER - DEFOGGER WIRE CONNECTOR) 
    1. Disconnect the defogger wire connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      K15-2 - K19-1 Always Below 1 Ω
      K15-2 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  13. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (DEFOGGER WIRE CONNECTOR - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Disconnect the defogger wire connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Q1-1 - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPAIR OR REPLACE WINDOW DEFOGGER WIRE 

  14. INSPECT RR DEF RELAY 
    1. Remove the RR DEF relay from the engine room relay block.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      (when battery voltage is not applied between terminals 1 and 2)
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      (when battery voltage is applied between terminals 1 and 2)
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 RR DEF Relay

    NG → REPLACE RR DEF RELAY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  15. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (RR DEF RELAY - BATTERY) 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Engine room R/B RR DEF relay terminal 5 - Body ground ignition switch off 11 to 14 V

      *1 Engine Room Relay Block and Engine Room Junction Block

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (RR DEF RELAY - NOISE FILTER) 

  16. REPLACE A/C AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL
