Inspection Procedure

NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point calibration (See CALIBRATION  ).
  1. CHECK TRANSMISSION TYPE 
    1. Check the transmission type.
    RESULT CONDITION CHART

    Result Proceed to
    Manual transmission Go to next step
    Automatic transmission Go to step 5
  2. CHECK TRANSFER INDICATOR SWITCH (for Center Differential Lock Position) 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Move the transfer shift lever from the H position to the HL position.
    3. Check whether the center differential locks using the center differential lock indicator light in the combination meter.
      RESULT CONDITION CHART

      Result Proceed to
      The center differential lock indicator light illuminates Go to next step
      The center differential lock indicator light does not illuminate Go to step 4
    4. Move the transfer shift lever from the HL position to the H position.
    5. Turn the ignition switch off.
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU EXI TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the A4 skid control ECU connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to on.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A4-27 (EXI) - Body ground Transfer shift lever H position 10 V or higher
      A4-27 (EXI) - Body ground Transfer shift lever HL position Below 1.5 V
    4. Turn the ignition switch off.
    5. Connect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    6. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

      OK: REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    2. Disconnect the B3 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A4-27 (EXI) - B3-8 (4WD) Always Below 1 Ω
    4. Connect the B3 ECM connector.
    5. Connect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    6. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

      OK: GO TO TRANSFER SYSTEM (PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE) 

  5. CHECK DIFFERENTIAL VACUUM ACTUATOR (A.D.D DETECTION SWITCH) 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Move the shift lever to N.
    3. Move the transfer shift lever from the H2 position to the H4 position.
    4. Check that 4WD is enabled using the 4WD indicator light in the combination meter.
      RESULT CONDITION CHART

      Result Proceed to
      The 4WD indicator light lluminates Go to next step
      The 4WD indicator light does not illuminate Go to step 7
    5. Move the transfer shift lever from the H4 position to the H position.
    6. Turn the ignition switch off.
  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU EXI TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the A4 skid control ECU connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to on.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A4-27 (EXI) - Body ground The 4WD indicator light does not illuminate 10 V or higher
      A4-27 (EXI) - Body ground The 4WD indicator light illuminates Below 1.5 V
    4. Turn the ignition switch off.
    5. Connect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    6. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

      OK: REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - 4WD CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    2. Disconnect the B60 4WD control ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A4-27 (EXI) - B60-8 (ADD) Always Below 1 Ω
    4. Connect the B60 4WD control ECU connector.
    5. Connect the A4 skid control ECU connector.
    6. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

      OK: GO TO TRANSFER SYSTEM (PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE)
