System Outline

The cruise control system makes it possible to maintain the vehicle at a constant speed by using a switch on the instrument panel to automatically adjust the opening of the engine throttle valve instead of by depressing of the accelerator pedal.

  1. Set Operation

When the ON-OFF SW is turned on, the system begins the preparations necessary for the cruise control and turns on the indicator light in the combination meter.

  2. Set Speed Control

If the - SET SW is pressed while the vehicle is being driven and the cruise control main SW is on, the vehicle will be maintained at that speed.

  3. Coast Control

If the - SET SW is held down while driving with the cruise control active, the engine control module adjusts the throttle valve to gradually and continuously decelerate the vehicle. However, if the - SET SW is only pressed momentarily, the vehicle speed will only be decelerated approximately 1.5 km/h each time the SW is pressed.

  4. Accel Control

If the + RES SW is held down while driving with the cruise control active, the engine control module adjusts the throttle valve to gradually and continuously accelerate the vehicle. However, if the + RES SW is only pressed momentarily, the vehicle speed will only be accelerated approximately 1.5 km/h each time the SW is pressed.

  5. Resume Control

If the cruise control is cancelled, and the vehicle speed is above the low speed limit (Approximately 40 km/h, 25 mph), pressing the + RES SW will cause the vehicle to be accelerated (or decelerated if needed) to the speed level which was set before the cruise control was cancelled.

  6. Manual Cancel Mechanism

If any of the following signals is received while driving with the cruise control active, the cruise control will be cancelled.

    * The stop light SW is turned on.

    * The CANCEL SW is turned on.

    * The ON-OFF SW is turned off.

    * The gear is shifted from the

    D

    position to any other position.

  7. Auto Cancel Operation

    * If any of the following conditions are detected, the set speed will be erased and the cruise control will be canceled.

    1. A disconnection and/or short in the stop light SW
    2. A malfunction in the vehicle speed signal
    3. A malfunction in the electronic throttle parts
    4. A malfunction in the stop light SW input circuit
    5. A malfunction in the cancel circuit
    6. The vehicle speed falls to 16 km/h or more below the set speed

      * If the following condition is detected, the control will be canceled but the set speed will be retained.

    7. The vehicle speed falls below the minimum speed limit.
  8. Overdrive Control Function

The overdrive will sometimes be cut off when driving uphill with the cruise control active. When the throttle opening information indicates that the hill climbing has finished, the overdrive will be reinstated once the overdrive timer has expired. Also, if the overdrive was cut off because the car was being manually accelerated via the accelerator pedal it will be reinstated as soon as the acceleration ceases.
