Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using a hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
Hand-held tester:
- Check STA signal.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester main switch ON.
CHECK:
Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester while the starter is operating.
OK:
IGNITION SWITCH POSITION TABLEIgnition Switch Position ON START STA Signal OFF ON - OK: Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
- NG: Go to next step.
- Check starter relay (Marking: ST) (See STARTER RELAY
).
- NG: Replace starter relay.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check STA signal.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester main switch ON.
CHECK:
Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester while the starter is operating.

- Check for open in harness and connectors between ECM and starter relay (Marking: ST) (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE
).
- NG: Repair or replace harness or connector.
- OK: Replace ECM (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).
OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester):
- Check voltage between terminal STA of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Disconnect the ECM with connector from body panel (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between the terminal STA of the ECM connector and body ground during the engine cranking.
OK: Voltage: 6 V or more
- OK: Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
