Inspection Procedure

  1. 1 Check operation of stop light. 
    1. Check if the stop lights go on and off normally when the brake pedal is depressed and released.
      1. NG Repair or replace stop lamp switch circuit. 
      2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. 2 Connect hand-held tester, and check operation of stop light. 

    PREPARATION:

    Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    CHECK:

    On the hand-held tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STOP LIGHT SW and read its value displayed on the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Brake Pedal Specified Condition
    Depressed STP Signal ON
    Released STP Signal OFF
    1. OK Check for intermittent problems (See  PRE-CHECK  ). 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. 3 Check stop lamp switch. 

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance between terminals when the switch is ON and OFF.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR OPEN)

    Switch Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
    ON (Free) 1 -2 Below 1 Ω
    OFF (Pushed in) 10 KΩ or higher

    1. NG Replace stop lamp switch. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. 4 Check for open and short in harness and connectors between stop lamp switch and ECM. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Disconnect the S8 stop lamp switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the E5 ECM connector.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Stop lamp switch (S8-1) - STP (E5-19) Below 1 Ω

    Standard (Check for short): 

    MIL INSPECTION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Stop lamp switch (S8-1) or STP (E5-19) - Body ground 10 KΩ or higher

    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 

MIL Circuit 



HINT:

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

MIL remains on Start inspection from step 1
MIL is not illuminated Start inspection from step 3

Troubleshoot each trouble symptom in accordance with the chart below.

  1. 1 Clear DTC. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Connect the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC 3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool ON.
    3. Read DTCs (See PRE-CHECK ).
    4. Clear DTCs (See PRE-CHECK ).

    CHECK:

    Check if the MIL turns off.

    Standard: The MIL should turn off. 

    1. OK Repair circuit indicated by output code (See  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  ). 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. 2 Check harness and connector (Check for short in wire harness). 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    CHECK:

    Check that MIL is not illuminated.

    Standard: MIL is not illuminated

    1. OK Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. NG Check and repair harness and connector (Combination meter-ECM). 
  3. 3 Check that MIL is illuminated. 

    CHECK:

    Check that MIL is illuminated when turning the ignition switch to ON.

    Standard: MIL is illuminated 

    1. OK System OK. 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. 4 Inspect combination meter (MIL circuit). 

    See BODY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM .

    1. NG Repair or replace bulb or combination meter. 
    2. Check and repair harness and connector (Combination meter-ECM).
