Inspection Procedure

Hand-held tester: 

  1. Connect the hand-held tester and check operation of fuel pump. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.
    3. Select the following menu items; DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / FUEL PUMP /SPD.

    CHECK:

    Check the relay operation while operating it with the hand-held tester.

    Standard: Operating noise can be heard from the relay. 

    1. OK Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  . 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. Check ECM power source circuit (See  ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT  ). 
    1. NG Repair or replace power source circuit. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. Check circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the circuit opening relay resistance.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    3-5 10 kΩ or higher
    3-5 Below 1 Ω (Apply battery voltage to terminals 1 and 2)

    1. NG Replace circuit opening relay. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. Check voltage between terminals FC and E01 of ECM. 

    PREPARATION:

    Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    CHECK:

    Measure the voltage between the specified terminals of the E4 and E6 ECM connectors.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR OPEN)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10)-E01 (E6-7) 9 to 14 V

    1. OK Go to   7 . 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. Check for open and short in harness and connectors between EFI relay and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Remove the EFI relay from the engine room R/B.
    2. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B - Circuit opening relay terminal 1 of J/B Below 1 Ω
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B - Circuit opening relay terminal 5 of J/B Below 1 Ω

    Standard (Check for short): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR OPEN)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B or Circuit opening relay terminal 1 of J/B - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B or Circuit opening relay terminal 5 of J/B - Body ground

    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  6. Check for open and short in harness and connectors between ECM and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
    2. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10) - Circuit opening relay terminal 2 of J/B Below 1 Ω
    FC (E4-10) - Circuit opening relay terminal 5 of J/B

    Standard (Check for short): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR OPEN)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10) or Circuit opening relay terminal 2 of J/B - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    FC (E4-10) or Circuit opening relay terminal 2 of J/B - Body ground

    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
  7. Check fuel pump (See  FUEL PUMP  ). 
    1. NG Repair or replace fuel pump. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  8. Check for open and short in harness and connector between circuit opening relay and fuel pump, fuel pump and body ground. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.
    2. Disconnect the F10 fuel pump connector.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Circuit opening relay terminal 3 of J/B - Fuel pump (F10-4) Below 1 Ω
    Fuel pump (F10-5) - Body ground

    Standard (Check for short): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Circuit opening relay terminal 3 of J/B or Fuel pump (F10-4) -Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK Proceed to next circuit inspection shown  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  . 

OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester): 

  1. Check operation of fuel pump. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Connect between terminals FC and E01 of the E4 and E6 ECM connectors.

    CHECK:

    Check for fuel pressure in the fuel inlet hose when it is pinched off.

    RESULT:

    There is pressure in fuel inlet hose.

    NOTE: At this time, you will hear the fuel flowing sound.

    1. OK Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  . 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. Check ECM power source circuit (See  ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT  ). 
    1. NG Repair or replace power source circuit. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. Check circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the circuit opening relay resistance.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    3-5 10 kΩ higher
    3-5 Below 1 Ω (when battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2)

    1. NG Replace circuit opening relay. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. Check voltage between terminal FC of E01 of ECM. 

    PREPARATION:

    Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    CHECK:

    Measure the voltage between the specified terminals of the E4 and E6 ECM connectors.

    OK:

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR OPEN)

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10)-E01 (E6-7) 9 to 14 V

    1. OK Go to   7 . 
    2. NG GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. Check for open and short in harness and connector between EFI relay and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Remove the EFI relay from the engine room R/B.
    2. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B - Circuit opening relay terminal 1 of J/B Below 1 Ω
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B - Circuit opening relay terminal 5 of J/B

    Standard (Check for short):

    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B or Circuit opening relay terminal 1 of J/B - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    EFI relay terminal 3 of R/B or Circuit opening relay terminal 5 of J/B - Body ground
    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  6. Check for open and short in harness and connectors between ECM and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
    2. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Standard (Check for short):

    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
  7. Check fuel pump assy (See  FUEL PUMP  ). 
    1. NG Repair or replace fuel pump assy. 
    2. OK GO TO NEXT STEP 
  8. Check for open and short in harness and connectors between circuit opening relay and fuel pump, fuel pump and body ground. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.
    2. Disconnect the F10 fuel pump connector.

    CHECK:

    Check the resistance.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for open): 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION (CHECK FOR SHORT)

    Fuel pump (F10-5) - Body ground Below 1 Ω

    BRAKE PEDAL AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Circuit opening relay terminal 3 of J/B or Fuel pump (F10-4) -Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    1. NG Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  .
