Inspection Procedure
Hand-held tester:
- Connect hand-held tester, and check STA signal.
PREPARATION;
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
CHECK:
Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester while the starter operates.
OK:
TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONIgnition Switch Position ON START STA Signal OFF ON - OK Check for intermittent problems (See PRE-CHECK ).
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check park/neutral position switch (A/T) or clutch start switch (M/T).
A/T models:
Inspect the park/neutral position switch.
PREPARATION:
Disconnect the P1 park/neutral position switch connector.
CHECK:
Measure the resistance between each terminal shown below when the shift lever is moved to each range.

TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONShift Range Tester Connection Specified Condition P 1 - 3, 6 - 9 Below 1 Ω R 2-3 N 3-5,6-9 D 3-7 2 3-4 L 3-8 M/T models:
Inspect the clutch start switch.
PREPARATION:
Disconnect the C12 clutch start switch connector.
CHECK:
Check the resistance between terminals when the switch is ON and OFF.

STA SIGNAL RESULTSwitch Position Tester Connection Specified Condition ON (pushed) 1 -2 Below 1 Ω OFF (free) 10 kΩ or higher - OK Go to 4 .
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Replace park/neutral position switch (A/T) or clutch start switch (M/T).
- Connect hand-held tester, and check STA signal.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
CHECK:
Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester.
RESULT:
TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONIgnition Switch Position ON START STA Signal OFF ON - OK System OK.
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check ignition switch.
CHECK:
Check the resistance between the connector terminals shown in the chart below.
OK:

- NG Replace ignition switch.
- OK GO TO NEXT STEP
- Connect hand-held tester, and check STA signal.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
CHECK:
Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester.
RESULT:
IGNITION SWITCH CONNECTOR TERMINALS RESISTANCEIgnition Switch Position ON START STA Signal OFF ON - OK System OK.
- NG Repair or replace harness and connector.
OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester):
- Check voltage between terminal STA of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminal STA of the ECM connector and body ground while the engine is cranking.
OK:
Voltage: 6 V or more
- OK Replace ECM (See INSPECTION ).
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check park/neutral position switch or clutch start switch.
- Inspect the park/neutral position switch (A/T).
- Inspect the clutch start switch (M/T) (see CLUTCH PEDAL ).
- NG Replace park/neutral position switch and go to next step.
- OK GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check voltage between terminal STA of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminal STA of the ECM connector and body ground while the engine is cranking.
OK:
Voltage: 6 V or more
- OK System OK.
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check ignition switch.
Check the resistance between the connector terminals shown in the table below.

- NG Replace ignition switch and go to next step.
- OK GO TO NEXT STEP
- Check voltage between terminal STA of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.

Measure the voltage between terminal STA of the ECM connector and body ground while the engine is cranking.
OK:
Voltage: 6 V or more
- OK System OK.
- NG GO TO NEXT STEP
- Repair or replace harness or connector between ECM and starter relay (Marked: ST) (See
HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE
).
- NG Repair or replace harness or connector.
- OK System OK.
