Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul

  1. PRECAUTION 
  2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  3. INSPECT PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch in the ON position, DTCs will be recorded.
    1. Using a Torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    2. Pull out the horn button assy from the steering wheel.
      NOTE: When removing the horn button assy, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
    3. Using a screwdriver, release the lock part of each airbag connector and disconnect the 2 airbag connectors.

    CAUTION:
    • When storing the horn button assy, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
    • Never disassemble the horn button assy.

  5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2. Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and main shaft assy.
    4. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assy.

    SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws, and then remove the column lower cover and the column upper cover.
  7. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSY (A/T TRANSAXLE) 
    1. With the key in the ACC position, push the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.

  8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
  9. REMOVE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assy.
  10. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assy.
  11. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET 
  12. DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT 
    1. Put matchmarks on the sliding yoke and steering intermediate shaft.
    2. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B, then disconnect the sliding yoke from the steering intermediate shaft.

  13. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assy.
    2. Remove the 3 bolts and steering column assy.

  14. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER 
    1. Widen the claw hung onto the upper bracket by approx. 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) using a screwdriver.
    2. Pull the transponder key amplifier toward the read of the vehicle with the claw open.
    NOTE: Take care not to use excessive force to prevent the case from being damaged.

  15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/ SWITCH BRACKET ASSY 
    1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
    2. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
    3. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/ switch bracket assy.

  16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN CLAMP UPPER 
  17. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSY 
    1. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assy in the ACC position.
    2. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assy.

  18. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the un-lock warning switch assy connector from the ignition or starter switch assy.
    2. Remove the un-lock warning switch assy.

  19. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assy from the steering column upper bracket assy.
  20. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the ignition or starter switch assy to the steering column upper bracket assy with the 2 screws.
  21. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the un-lock warning switch assy.
    2. Connect the un-lock warning switch assy connector to the ignition or starter switch assy.

  22. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSY 
    1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assy is in the ACC position.
    2. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.
  23. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION 
    1. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when removing the key.
    2. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when inserting the key and turning it to the ACC position.
  24. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER 
    1. Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
    2. Push the transponder key amplifier up and install it to the upper bracket.
    NOTE: Take care not to push the amplifier up with excessive force to prevent it from being damaged.

  25. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/ SWITCH BRACKET ASSY 
    1. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/ switch bracket assy and steering column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
    2. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

  26. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Install the steering column assy with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

    2. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.

  27. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and steering intermediate shaft.
    2. Install bolt B and torque bolt A.

      Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

  28. INSTALL COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET 
  29. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the windshield wiper switch assy and connect the connector.
  30. INSTALL HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assy and connect the connector.
  31. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  32. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
  33. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSY (A/T TRANSAXLE) 
    1. With the key in the ACC position, push into the floor shift parking lock cable and install it.

  34. CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION 
  35. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Install the column upper cover.
    2. Install the column lower cover with the 3 screws.
  36. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE 
    1. Check that the ignition switch is off.
    2. Check that the battery negative terminal is disconnected.
      NOTE: After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.

    4. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.

    HINT:

    The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either right or left of the center.

  37. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
    2. Install the steering wheel assy with the set nut.

      Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) 

    3. Connect the connector.
  38. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSY (See  HORN BUTTON ASSY  ) 
  39. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE:
    • Never use the airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
    • Make sure that the horn button assy is installed to the specified torque.
    • If the horn button assy has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the horn button assy with a new one.
    • When installing the horn button assy, take care so that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.
    1. Connect the 2 airbag connectors.
    2. Install the horn button assy after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx screws is caught on the screw case.
    3. Using a Torx socket wrench, torque the 2 Torx screws.

    Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in..lbf)

  40. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT 
  41. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (See  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES CHECK/CLEAR  )
