Inspection Procedure

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING HAND-HELD TESTER 
    1. Operate the hand-held tester according to the steps on the display and select the "ACTIVE TEST".

      METER: 

      DYNASTIC NOTE

      Item Target Details Diagnostic Note
      SPEED METER 0 / 40 (24) / 80 (48) / 120 (72) / 160 (96) / 200 (120) / 240 (149) km/h (mph) -

      OK: 

      Needle indication is normal. 

    1. NG : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  2. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL) 
    1. Operate the hand-held tester according to the steps on the display and select the "DATA LIST".

      METER: 

      DATA LIST

      Item Measurement Item/ Range (Display) Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      SPEED METER Vehicle speed / Min.: 0 km/h (0 mph), Max.: 255 km/h (158 mph) Almost same as actual vehicle speed (When driving) -

      OK: 

      Vehicle speed displayed on the tester is almost the same as the actual vehicle speed. 

    1. NG : Go to step 3 
    2. OK : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  3. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL) 
    1. Operate the hand-held tester according to the steps on the display and select the "DATA LIST".

      ABS: 

      DATA LIST

      Item Measurement Item/ Range (Display) Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      (FR/FL/RR/RL) SPD Vehicle speed / Min.: 0 km/h (0 mph), Max.: 326 km/h (202 mph) Almost same as actual speed (When driving) -

      OK: 

      Vehicle speed displayed on the tester is almost the same as the actual vehicle speed. 

    1. NG : GO TO BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) (W/O VSC), (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) (w/VSC) 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  4. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSY 

    INSPECTION USING AN OSCILLOSCOPE 

    1. Check the input signal wave form.
      1. Remove the combination meter assy.
      2. Connect the oscilloscope to the terminals E3-14 (SI) and body ground.
      3. Start the engine.

      4. Check the signal wave form according to the condition (s) in the table below.
        SIGNAL WAVE FORM CONDITION

        Item Condition
        Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms/DIV.
        Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 20 km/h (12 mph)

      OK: 

      The wave form is displayed as shown in the illustration. 

      HINT:

      As the vehicle speed increases, the cycle of the signal wave form narrows.

    1. NG : Go to step 5 
    2. OK : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BETWEEN ABS & TRACTION ACTUATOR ASSY (VSC) AND COMBINATION METER ASSY) 
    1. Disconnect the E3 and A34 (A40) connectors.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E3-14 (SI) - A34-12 (SP1) ((2)) Always Below 1 Ω
      E3-14 (SI) - A40-23 (SP1) ((1)) Always Below 1 Ω
      E3-14 (SI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      (1) *1): w/o VSC
      (2) *2): w/VSC

    1. NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  6. INSPECT ABS & TRACTION ACTUATOR ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the A34 (A40) connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A34-12 (SP1) ((2)) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 10 to 14 V
      A40-23 (SP1) ((1)) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 10 to 14 V
      (1) *1): w/o VSC
      (2) *2): w/VSC

    1. NG : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
    2. OK : GO TO BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) (W/O VSC), (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) (w/VSC)
