Inspection Procedure

HINT:

• Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
• The throttle actuator current (THROTTLE MOT) and the throttle actuator duty ratio (THROTTLE OPN / THROTTLE CLS) can be read using the hand-held tester. However the ECM shuts off the throttle actuator current when the ETCS malfunctions.

1. INSPECT THROTTLE W/MOTOR BODY ASSY (RESISTANCE OF THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR) 
   1. Disconnect the B30 throttle w/motor body connector.
   2. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the throttle control motor.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION
      
      

      Tester Connections	Specified Conditions
      M+ (B30-2) - M- (B30-1)	0.3 to 100Ω at 20°C (68°F)

   3. Reconnect the throttle w/motor body connector.

   1. NG: REPLACE THROTTLE W/MOTOR BODY ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT  ) 
   2. OK: Go to Next Step. 
2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR - ECM) 
   1. Disconnect the B30 throttle w/motor body connector.
   2. Disconnect the B45 ECM connector.
   3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION
      
      

      Tester Connections	Specified Conditions
      M+ (B30-2) - M+ (B45-5)	Below 1 Ω
      M- (B30-1) - M- (B45-4)	Below 1 Ω

      Standard (Check for short): 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION
      
      

      Tester Connections	Specified Conditions
      M+ (B30-2) or M+ (B45-5) - Body ground	10 kΩ or higher
      M- (B30-1) or M- (B45-4) - Body ground	10 kΩ or higher

   4. Reconnect the throttle w/motor body connector.
   5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

   1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
   2. OK: Go to Next Step. 
3. INSPECT THROTTLE W/MOTOR BODY ASSY 
   1. Check for foreign objects between the throttle valve and the housing.

      OK: Normal 

   1. NG: REMOVE FOREIGN OBJECT AND CLEAN THROTTLE BODY 
   2. OK: Go to Next Step. 
4. INSPECT THROTTLE VALVE 
   1. Check if the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly.

      OK: The throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. 

   1. NG: REPLACE THROTTLE W/MOTOR BODY ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT  ) 
   2. OK: REPLACE ECM (SEE  REPLACEMENT  )
