Checking Fluid Levels

CAUTION: Do not overfill the Transaxle.
NOTE: After extended driving at high speeds, in hot weather, in heavy traffic conditions, or pulling a trailer, wait until engine cools down (about 30 minutes) before checking transmission fluid level.
NOTE: If the engine does not run or the transmission fluid has been replaced from a dry fill, use the COOL range on the dipstick as a starting point reference.
  1. Start and run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature of 158-176° F ( 70-80° C ).
  2. Park the vehicle on level surface.
  3. With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever into all positions from "P" to "L" position and return to "P" position.
  4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean.
  5. Place the dipstick back fully into the fill pipe.
  6. Pull out the dipstick and check that transmission fluid level is in the HOT range. See Fig 1. Add fluid if necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
    1. Check the fluid condition. If the fluid smells burnt or is Black, replace it. For replacement procedures, see DRAINING & REFILLING .
    2. Road test the vehicle and recheck transmission fluid level to verify it is at the proper level.
