Malfunction Indicator Light Inspection

NOTE: The malfunction indicator light (MIL) may also be referred to as CHECK ENGINE light. Inspect MIL to ensure it is operational and will come on if a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set.
  1. Check that MIL comes on when ignition switch is turned ON and engine is not running. If MIL comes on, go to next step. If MIL does not light up, trouble shoot combination meter. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. When engine starts, MIL should go off. If light remains on, it means diagnosis system has detected a malfunction or abnormality in system. Proceed to TESTING PROCEDURE .
