Power Steering Gear: Replacement

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. Replace lower bearing of control valve shaft  .
    1. Using a brass bar and a hammer, tap out the lower bearing from the rack housing.
    2. Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
    3. Install the bearing into the rack housing.

  2. Replace oil seal of rack housing for control valve shaft assembly side  .
    1. Using SST, press out the oil seal.
      1. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00260), 09950-70010 (09951-07360)

      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the rack housing.
    2. Coat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid.
    3. Using SST, press in the oil seal.
      1. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00230, 09951-00400, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951- 07360)

    NOTE:
    • Make sure to install the oil seal facing in the correct direction.
    • Take care that the oil seal does not get reversed as you install it.
  3. Replace bushing and lower oil seal of control valve assembly  .
    1. Using SST, remove the bushing from the rack housing.
      1. SST 09612-24014 (09613-22011)

      CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the rack housing.
      NOTE:
      • Separate the SST as shown in Fig 4 to use it.
      • As shown in Fig 4, from the opposite side of SST confirm that it's claw is firmly caught on the bushing.
    2. Using a screwdriver and a hammer, tap out the oil seal from the rack housing.

      NOTE: To prevent rack housing damage, wind vinyl tape on the screwdriver.
    3. Coat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid.
    4. Using SST, press in the oil seal.

      NOTE:
      1. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00230, 09951-00340, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951- 07150)
      NOTE: Make sure to install the oil seal facing in the correct direction.
    5. Coat a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
    6. Using SST, press in the bushing.
      1. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00280, 09951-00350, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951- 07150)

  4. Replace teflon ring and O-ring of steering rack  .
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the teflon ring and O-ring from the steering rack.
      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the groove for the teflon ring.
    2. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it to the steering rack.

    3. Expand a new teflon ring with your fingers.

      NOTE: Be careful not to overexpand the teflon ring.
    4. Coat the teflon ring with power steering fluid.
    5. Install the teflon ring to the steering rack and settle it down with your fingers.

    6. Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the ring to seat it.
      1. SST 09630-24014 (09631-24031)
      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the ring.

  5. Replace teflon rings of control valve assembly  .
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the 4 teflon rings from the control valve assembly.
      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the grooves for the teflon rings.
    2. Expand 4 new teflon rings with your fingers.
      NOTE: Be careful not to overexpand the teflon ring.
    3. Coat the teflon rings with power steering fluid.

    4. Install the teflon rings to the control valve assembly and settle them down with your fingers.
    5. Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the teflon rings until they fit to the control valve assembly.
      1. SST 09631-20081

    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the teflon rings.
  6. Replace union seats  .
    1. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 union seats.

    2. Using an extension bar and a hammer, tap in 2 new union seats.

    NOTE: Before installing the union seat, remove dust sticking to the rack housing.
