Transaxle Disassembly: Inspection
- Check 5th gear synchronizer ring for wear or damage. Check braking effect of synchronizer ring. Turn synchronizer ring in one direction while pushing it to gear cone. See Fig 1. Ensure ring locks. If braking effect is insufficient, apply small amount of fine lapping compound between synchronizer ring and gear cone. Lightly rub synchronizer ring and gear cone together. Recheck braking effect.
- Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between synchronizer ring back and gear spline end. See Fig 2. Clearance should be .0295" (.750 mm). If clearance is less than specification, replace synchronizer ring, and apply small amount of fine lapping compound on gear cone.
- Check gear shift fork and hub sleeve clearance. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between hub sleeve and shift fork. See Fig 2. Clearance should be .020" (.50 mm). If clearance exceeds specification, replace shift fork or hub sleeve.
