Test No. 22: Automatic Turn Off System Does Not Operate

NOTE: Automatic turn off system turns off the headlights after 30 seconds when all side doors and back door are closed with ignition in ACC or LOCK position with headlight control switch turned to position No. 2. Position No. 2 turns on the headlights along with park lights, taillights, side marker lights and instrument panel lights. Lights will automatically turn off when driver's side front door is opened with headlight control switch in position No. 1. Position No. 1 turns on the park lights along with taillights, side marker lights and instrument panel lights. If doors are locked with keyless remote transmitter, lights will turn off immediately.
  1. Check door courtesy switch on driver's side front door. See DOOR COURTESY SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If door courtesy switch is okay, go to next step. If door courtesy switch is defective, replace door courtesy switch and recheck automatic turn off system operation.
  2. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between driver's side front door courtesy switch and body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - SEQUOIA article. Body ECU is located behind driver's side of instrument panel and contains 3 electrical connectors. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical are defective, repair as necessary and recheck automatic turn off system operation.
  3. Check ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If ignition switch is okay, go to next step. If ignition switch is defective, replace ignition switch and recheck automatic turn off system operation. See IGNITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Check driver's door Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for proper voltage and input signals. See DRIVER'S DOOR ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck automatic turn off system operation.
  5. Replace driver's door ECU with a known-good door ECU and recheck automatic turn off system operation. If automatic turn off system operates properly, original driver's door ECU was defective. If automatic turn off system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for driver's door ECU for intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - SEQUOIA article. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck automatic turn off system operation.
  6. Check body ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See BODY ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck automatic turn off system operation.
  7. Replace body ECU with a known-good body ECU and recheck automatic turn off system operation. If automatic turn off system operates properly, original body ECU was defective. If automatic turn off system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for body ECU for an intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - SEQUOIA article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
