Horn Switch

WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with air bag supplement restraint system. Before attempting ANY procedures involving steering column or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT systems article.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove side cover from each side of steering wheel. See Fig 1. Loosen torx screw at each side of steering wheel. See Fig 1.
  2. Pull horn pad upward and place it on the steering column. DO NOT disconnect electrical connector at the horn pad. Disconnect electrical connector from the slip ring. See Fig 1.
  3. Using ohmmeter, check that no continuity exists between body ground and terminal No. 6 for the slip ring. See Fig 1. Using ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between body ground and terminal No. 6 for the slip ring when horn button contact plate is pressed against spoke on steering wheel. See Fig 1. If continuity is not as specified, repair or replace horn button contact plate, steering wheel or wiring as necessary. Reinstall horn pad and tighten torx screws to 63 INCH lbs. (7.1 N.m). Install negative battery cable.
