Power Source Circuit

  1. Note location of transponder key amplifier near ignition lock cylinder on upper steering column bracket. See Figure. Using voltmeter, check voltage between terminals No. 1 (White wire) and No. 7 (White/Black wires) at transponder key amplifier electrical connector. This is the +B and ground terminals. See Figure. Voltage should be 10-14 volts. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step. If voltage is within specification, proceed to next item to be inspected. See TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS  table under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Remove EFI fuse (20-amp). EFI fuse is located in fuse/relay box at driver's side front corner of engine compartment. Check EFI fuse. If EFI fuse is okay, go to next step. If EFI fuse is defective, check for short in wiring harness and electrical connectors connected to EFI fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . For additional wiring for EFI fuse, see ENGINE PERFORMANCE article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Replace EFI fuse and repair wiring or electrical connector as necessary.
  3. Check EFI relay operation. See EFI RELAY  under COMPONENT TESTS. If EFI relay is okay, go to next step. If EFI relay is defective, replace EFI relay.
  4. The +B wiring circuit between ECM and transponder key amplifier should be checked. Ensure ignition is off. Remove necessary components for access to ECM. ECM is located behind glove box and contains 5 electrical connectors. See Figure. Disconnect ECM electrical connector E5. See Figure.
  5. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminal No. 1 (White wire) at transponder key amplifier electrical connector and terminal No. 16 (White wire) at ECM electrical connector E5. See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in White wire or electrical connector between transponder key amplifier and ECM.
  6. Replace transponder key amplifier. See TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
