Park/Neutral Position Switch Circuit

  1. Road test vehicle at greater than 25 MPH. Ensure gear selector is in "D" position. Engage cruise control. Ensure cruise control indicator light comes on. Taking care not to move gear selector to "P" or "R", move gear selector to any other position. If cruise control indicator light does not go off, go to next step. If cruise control indicator light goes off, perform next test under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  2. Disconnect Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch harness connector. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between PNP switch terminals No. 3 (Red/Blue wire) and No. 7 (Green/Black wire). See Fig 1. If continuity does not exist, replace PNP switch. If continuity exists, go to next step.
  3. If vehicle is not equipped with Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) system, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with VSC system, go to step  5.
  4. Check wiring harness and connectors between cruise control ECU harness connector C15 and PNP switch for damage or poor connections. Repair or replace as necessary. If wiring and connections are okay, replace cruise control ECU. After repair, retest system.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage by backprobing cruise control ECU harness connector C15 terminal No. 2 (Green/Black wire). If gear selector is in "D", battery voltage should exist. If gear selector is in any position other than "D", less than one volt should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair or replace wiring and/or connectors as necessary. After repair, retest system.
  6. Check wiring harness and connectors between cruise control ECU harness connector C15 and VSC ECU harness connector S10 for damage or poor connections. Repair or replace as necessary. If wiring and connections are okay, replace cruise control ECU. After repair, retest system.
  7. Check for open or short circuit in wiring harness between cruise control ECU and PNP switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If wiring harness and connectors are okay, replace cruise control ECU and retest system.
