Electronically Controlled Transmission Communication Circuit

NOTE: If scan tool is being used, begin test procedure at step  1. If scan tool is not being used, begin test procedure at step  3.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector No. 3. See Figure. Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions, access check automatic transmission data list. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS article. If scan tool detects automatic transmission problem, repair circuits as necessary and retest system. If scan tool does not detect automatic transmission problem, go to next step.
  2. Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions, check cruise control ECU data list. If scan tool detects problem, go to next step. If scan does not detect a problem, system is operating properly at this time. Fault may be intermittent. If sent here from SYMPTOM TESTS, perform next test under appropriate symptom.
  3. Reconnect cruise control ECU harness connector C15. Using DVOM connected to body ground, measure voltage by backprobing cruise control ECU harness connector C15 terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure. Road test vehicle. Turn OD switch to ON and OFF positions. When OD is on, battery voltage should exist. When OD is off, less than one volt should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check for faulty wiring or connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair or replace as necessary and retest system.
  4. Remove cruise control ECU with connectors connected. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Disconnect cruise control harness connector C15. Using DVOM connected to body ground, measure voltage at cruise control ECU C15 connector terminal No. 14 (White wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace cruise control ECU and retest system.
  5. Check Red/Yellow wire between cruise control ECU and electronically control transmission solenoid. Also check harness connectors for damage or poor connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair or replace as necessary. If wiring harness and connectors are okay, replace ECM and retest system.
