On-Board Diagnostic Mode

  1. Put vehicle in initialized condition by removing key from ignition lock cylinder, close and lock all doors, and ensure open door warning light is not illuminated. Depress lock or unlock switch 3 times or more on remote transmitter. Enter into self-diagnostic mode by inserting ignition key into ignition lock cylinder, pull it out, insert it again and turn ignition switch OFF then ON and OFF once within 5 seconds of first pulling ignition key out of ignition lock cylinder. Within 30 seconds, turn ignition key OFF then ON and OFF 9 times. If at this point any of the above conditions are not met, return system to normal mode. Turn ignition switch ON after entering self-diagnostic mode.
  2. At this point, the taillights should flash on and off when pressing transmitter buttons. If taillights flash, go to next step. If taillights do not flash, verify that vehicle is in diagnostic mode. If vehicle is not in diagnostic mode, return to step  1. If vehicle is in diagnostic mode, check operation of taillights. If taillights are not functioning correctly, see EXTERIOR LIGHTS article. If exterior lights are functioning properly, test key unlock warning switch by checking continuity between ground and terminal No. 21 (Yellow wire) of door lock control relay when ignition key is inserted in ignition lock cylinder. If continuity does not exist, replace ignition key unlock warning switch. See KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Press LOCK switch on remote transmitter. Taillights should flash on for .2 seconds, off for .5 seconds and on for .2 seconds if a normal signal is received. Press UNLOCK switch on remote transmitter. Taillights should flash on for .2 seconds, off for .2 seconds and then on for .5 seconds if a normal signal is received. Press PANIC switch on remote transmitter. Taillights should flash on for .5 seconds and off for .5 seconds if a normal signal is received. If taillights turn on while receiving, but do not flash, remote transmitter is not programmed for this vehicle, or not synchronized with rolling code. If taillights respond to transmitter, go to next step. If taillights do not respond, go to step  5. If all responses to all buttons is the same, try to enter into rewrite or confirmation mode. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. If wireless door lock control functions normally when recognition code is registered, system is okay at this time.
  4. Transmit signal from remote transmitter while walking around vehicle within 3 feet for about 20 seconds. Repeat test. If taillights do not respond, try a second remote transmitter. If second remote transmitter does not operate correctly, replace wireless door lock control receiver.
  5. Ensure continuity is present in Yellow wire between door lock control receiver terminal No. 3 and door lock control relay terminal No. 23. Also ensure continuity is present in Blue wire between door lock control receiver terminal No. 2 and door lock control relay terminal No. 22. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, go to next step.
  6. Measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and door lock control receiver terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). Turn transmitter on. If about 6-7 volts are present, go to next step. If about 6-7 volts are not present, repair open circuit in Blue wire.
  7. Measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and door lock control receiver terminal No. 5 (Blue/Yellow wire). If 10-14 volts are present, go to next step. If 10-14 volts are not present, check Blue/Yellow wire and DOME fuse for an open circuit.
  8. Ensure continuity is present between ground and door lock control receiver terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire). Repair White/Black wire as necessary. If White/Black wire is okay, replace door control receiver.
