Illuminated Entry System Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Illuminated entry system consists of interior (dome) light, ignition key cylinder light and foot light.
  1. Check all bulbs for broken filaments. Replace as necessary. If bulbs are okay, check all light fixtures for loose connections or broken terminals. Using DVOM, check light fixtures with switches for continuity between switch terminals when turned to ON position. Repair or replace as necessary. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  2. Testing Door Courtesy Switch & Circuit

Check to see if door courtesy light (in door panel) comes on when each door is opened, and goes off when each door is closed. If courtesy light operates as specified, go to step  5. If courtesy light does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  3. Remove door courtesy switch for affected door. Using DVOM, check for continuity between switch terminal and switch body. With switch released, continuity should exist. With switch depressed, continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace door courtesy switch and retest system. If continuity is as specified, go to next step.
  4. Check for open/short circuit in wiring between affected door courtesy switch and body ECU, and between door courtesy light and body ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  5. NOTE: Door unlock detection switches are built into door lock motor assemblies.

  6. Testing Driver's Door Unlock Detection Switch & Circuit
Remove left front door panel. Locate and remove door lock assembly. See Figure. Using DVOM, check for continuity between door lock assembly connector terminals No. 3 and 4. See Fig 1. With switch in ON position (door lock set to UNLOCK position), continuity should exist. With switch in OFF position (door lock set to LOCK position), continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace door lock assembly and retest system.
  7. Using DVOM, check for open/short circuit in Black/White wire between door lock assembly harness connector terminal No. 3 and driver's door ECU harness connector terminal No. 9. Also check for open/short circuit in Light Green wire between door lock assembly harness connector terminal No. 4 and driver's door ECU harness connector terminal No. 24. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary and retest system. If both circuits are okay, go to next step.

  8. Testing Front Passenger's Door Unlock Detection Switch & Circuit

Remove right front door panel.
  9. Using DVOM, check for open/short circuit in Black/White wire between door lock assembly harness connector terminal No. 4 and driver's door ECU harness connector terminal No. 13. Also check for open/short circuit in Yellow wire between door lock assembly harness connector terminal No. 3 and driver's door ECU harness connector terminal No. 4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary and retest system. If both circuits are okay, go to next step.
  10. Testing Rear Passenger's Door Unlock Detection Switch & Circuit

Remove appropriate rear door panel. Locate and remove door lock assembly. See Figure. Using DVOM, check for continuity between door lock assembly connector terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig 1. With switch in ON position (door lock set to UNLOCK position), continuity should exist. With switch in OFF position (door lock set to LOCK position), continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace door unlock detection switch and retest system.
  11. Using DVOM, check for open/short circuit in Light Blue/Orange wire between affected rear door unlock detection switch harness connector and body ECU harness connector terminal No. 5. Also check for open circuit in White/Black wire between door unlock detection switch harness connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary and retest system. If both circuits are okay, go to next step.
  12. Testing Body Control ECU

Check all voltage inputs to body control ECU. See BODY CONTROL ECU  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If any voltage inputs are not as specified, repair affected circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If all voltage inputs are as specified, substitute known-good body control ECU and retest system. If system now works properly, replace body control ECU. If system still does not work, recheck all related system wiring and connections.
