Test No. 23: Open Door Warning Light Does Not Operate

  1. Check DOME fuse (7.5-amp). DOME fuse is located in fuse/relay box at driver's side of instrument panel. See Figure. If DOME fuse is okay, go to next step. If DOME fuse is defective, replace fuse and repair wiring harness or electrical connector on wiring circuit as necessary and recheck open door warning light operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  2. Open door warning light is located on multi-display information center at the center of instrument panel, just above the air vent assembly. Check light bulb for open door warning light. If light bulb is okay, go to next step. If light bulb is defective, replace light bulb and recheck open door warning light operation.
  3. Open each door and check that door courtesy light comes on when door is opened and goes off when door is closed. If any door courtesy light does not operate properly when door is open and closed, go to next step. If door courtesy light operates properly when each door is open and closed, go to step  6.
  4. Check door courtesy switch. See DOOR COURTESY SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If door courtesy switch is okay, go to next step. If door courtesy switch is defective, replace door courtesy switch and recheck open door warning light operation.
  5. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between door courtesy switch and body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. For door courtesy lights on driver's side front door and passenger's side front door, it may be necessary to check wiring between door courtesy light and driver's ECU or passenger's door ECU. Driver's door ECU and passenger's door ECU are located on each door and is incorporated into the power window switch assembly. See Figure. Body ECU is located at driver's side of instrument panel on the fuse/relay box. See Figure. Electrical connector B4 (25-pin) and electrical connector B5 (25-pin) are located at each side of body ECU and a 12-pin electrical connector at rear of body ECU. See Figure.
  6. Check operation of room light, front personal light and each vanity light. Room light is located on the headliner and may also be referred to as dome light or interior light. See Figure. Front personal light is located at the front of headliner, near the windshield and vanity lights are located on each sun visor. See Figure. If any light does not operate, go to next step. If all lights operate, go to step  12.
  7. Check bulb for light which did not operate. If bulb is okay go to next step. If bulb is defective, replace bulb and check light operation.
  8. To check inoperative room light, remove room light from headliner. Disconnect electrical connector from room light. Using ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between body ground and terminal No. 1 with room light switch in ON position. See Figure. Check for continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2 with room light switch in DOOR position. See Figure. If continuity exists as specified, reinstall electrical connector and room light. Go to step  11. If continuity does not exist as specified, replace room light and recheck room light operation.
  9. To check inoperative front personal light, remove front personal light from headliner. Disconnect electrical connector from front personal light. Note electrical terminal identification on front personal light. See Figure. Using ohmmeter, check that no continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 3 with switch on front personal light in OFF position and that continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 3 with switch in ON position. Check that no continuity exists between terminals No. 2 and 3 with switch at any position. If operation is as specified, reinstall electrical connector and front personal light. Go to step  11. If operation is not as specified, replace front personal light and recheck front personal light operation.
  10. To check inoperative vanity light, disconnect electrical connector from vanity light. Using ohmmeter, check that no continuity exists between electrical terminals on vanity light with mirror cover closed to the OFF position and that continuity exists with mirror cover opened to the ON position. If operation is as specified, reinstall electrical connector. Go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace vanity light and recheck vanity light operation.
  11. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery, DOME fuse, inoperative light (room light, front personal light or vanity light) and ground connection. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. For additional wiring for DOME fuse, see POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary and recheck light operation.
  12. Check printed circuit board in multi-display information center at the center of instrument panel for problem which prevents operation of open door warning light operation. If printed circuit board is defective, repair or replace printed circuit board as necessary and recheck open door warning light operation. If printed circuit board is okay, check wiring harness and electrical connectors between body Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and open door warning light on multi-display information center. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
