Speed Sensor Diagnostics

NOTE: While diagnosing speed sensors, system functions as a standard brake system.
  1. Ensure battery voltage is about 12 volts. Turn ignition on. ABS and BRAKE lights should come on, then go out after about 3 seconds. If either warning light does not come on, check appropriate fuse, bulb, and wiring harness. See ABS WARNING LIGHT  and BRAKE WARNING LIGHT  . See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS - CARS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect DLC3 terminals Ts and CG. See Figure. Start engine. Verify ABS light flashes 4 times per second. If ABS light does not operate as specified, go to ABS WARNING LIGHT . If ABS light does operate as specified, go to next step.
  3. Drive vehicle straight ahead at a speed greater than 28 MPH for several seconds. Stop vehicle. Connect jumper between DLC3 terminals Tc and CG. See Figure. If no malfunction is detected, ABS light blinks 2 times a second. If a malfunction is detected, ABS light will begin to flash a 2-digit DTC. First series of flashes indicates first digit of DTC. After a 1.5 second pause, second series of flashes indicates second digit of DTC.
  4. If 2 or more DTCs are stored, there will be a 2.5-second pause between each DTC. After all DTCs are flashed, there will be a 4-second pause, then all DTCs will repeat.
  5. Record DTCs. Turn ignition off. Check appropriate speed sensor circuit, speed sensor installation and speed sensor rotor. See DTC DEFINITIONS  table. See FRONT SPEED SENSORS , REAR SPEED SENSORS  and SENSOR ROTORS  under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair as necessary. Remove jumper wires from DLC. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DTCS .
