VERSION 3.1 DIAGNOSTIC TOOL SET SOFTWARE COMMUNICATION PROBLEM WITH 1997 VEHICLES

Model(s): 1997 Toyota Avalon, Camry, Paseo, Tacoma, Tercel,

4Runner Reference: Special Service Tools Bulletin No.: SS002-96 Date: August 30, 1996

SERVICE INFORMATION

Due to a change in communication standard for certain 1997 Model Year vehicles, the Version 3.1 Diagnostic Tool Set Software will display the error message when the technician attempts to use the ALL DATA list or the ACTIVE TEST functions in ENHANCED OBD II. See Fig 1.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

The vehicles effected by this change are:

All vehicles with 1 MZ-FE

Camry 5S-FE

Tercel / Paseo 5E-FE

Tacoma / 4Runner 3RZ-FE

This problem will be corrected with the release of 1997 Model Year software in November. Until then, there are two alternatives for diagnosing these vehicles with the current Version 3.1 software:

  1. ENHANCED OBD II.
    • USER DATA list (less than 50 data lines)
    • Specialized data list from SELECT DATA menu (MISFIRE, O2 SENSOR, EGR, etc.)
  2. CARB OBD II.
    • All CARB OBD II functions work normally.
