Fuel Rails & Fuel Injectors: Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  under FUEL SYSTEM. Remove air cleaner hose, air cleaner cap assembly, air filter and "V" bank cover. See Figure.
  2. Remove engine mount support brace for engine mount at timing belt end of engine. Engine mount support brace fits from top of coolant outlet to the engine mount.
  3. Remove spark plug wire assembly. Disconnect control cables, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses at throttle body. Disconnect electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from vacuum switching valves on emission control valve set, located on side of air intake chamber. See Figure. Remove emission control valve set.
  4. Remove Data Link Connector No. 1 (DLC1) from end of bracket. See Figure. Disconnect power steering pressure hose from engine hanger. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, ground straps, air hoses and vacuum hoses for removal of air intake chamber. Disconnect PCV hose from PCV valve on rear cylinder head.
  5. Remove engine hanger and air intake chamber support brace from air intake chamber. Remove EGR pipe and gaskets. Remove air intake chamber and gaskets. Remove air assist assembly with hoses.
  6. Note location of electrical connectors on fuel injectors for reassembly reference. Disconnect electrical connectors at fuel injectors. Disconnect fuel inlet hose at fuel filter. Disconnect fuel return hose from No. 1 fuel pipe at rear of fuel rail.
  7. Loosen union bolts at No. 2 fuel pipe at front of fuel rails. Disconnect vacuum hose and fuel return hose from fuel pressure regulator.
  8. Remove fuel rail-to-intake manifold bolts for front (radiator side) fuel rail. Remove union bolt for No. 2 fuel pipe from front of the rear (firewall side) fuel rail.
CAUTION: When removing fuel rail, use care not to allow fuel injectors to fall from fuel rail.
  9. Remove front fuel rail with fuel injectors and No. 2 fuel pipe. Remove union bolt and No. 2 fuel pipe with gaskets from front fuel rail.
  10. Remove No. 1 fuel pipe-to-intake manifold bolt and fuel rail-to-intake manifold bolts for rear (firewall side) fuel rail. Remove rear fuel rail with fuel injectors and No. 1 fuel pipe. Remove spacers from intake manifold. Remove fuel injectors from fuel rail. Remove "O" rings and grommets from fuel injector.
