Valve Clearance

  1. Check and adjust valves with engine cold. Remove valve covers and gaskets. Rotate crankshaft pulley so crankshaft pulley groove aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover and cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on right side, viewed from flywheel end. See Fig 2.
  2. Ensure cylinder No. 1 valve lifters are loose and cylinder No. 4 valve lifters are tight. If valve lifters are not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees and realign crankshaft pulley groove with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
  3. Use feeler gauge to measure valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft lobe. Measure and record valve clearance of exhaust valve on cylinder No. 2 and intake valve on cylinder No. 6. See Fig 2.

  4. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 1 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 3.
  5. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 2 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 4.
  6. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 3 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 5.
  7. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 4 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 6.
  8. Rotate crankshaft pulley an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance of intake valve on cylinder No. 5 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 1.
  9. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See the VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.

  10. If valve clearance adjustment is required, rotate crankshaft pulley so camshaft lobe is facing upward on valve to be adjusted. Position adjusting shim notch area toward spark plug.
  11. Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55040) is used for adjusting valve clearance. Press valve lifter downward using SST "A" of valve clearance adjuster. See Fig 1. Install SST "B" between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST "A".
  12. Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Using micrometer, measure thickness of removed adjusting shim.
  13. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. Refer to the SHIM THICKNESS  table. Install adjusting shim.
  14. Using SST "A", press down on valve lifter and remove SST "B". Recheck valve clearance. See SHIM THICKNESS  table. Shim thickness can also be determined by using the following formula: N = T + A.
    • N = Thickness of adjuster shim required.
    • T = Thickness of adjuster shim removed.
    • A = Measured clearance minus valve clearance specification.
  15. Apply sealant at front camshaft bearing caps-to-cylinder head surfaces where valve cover gasket seals. Install valve covers using NEW gaskets.
