Steering Gear: Reassembly

  1. If needle bearings were removed, use bearing remover/installer to install upper bearing even with housing inner surface. Install outer bearing so bearing is positioned .909" (23.09 mm) from outer edge of housing.
  2. Install "O" ring, Teflon ring, spacer and snap ring. Insert Ring Former (09631-00120 ) into Teflon ring to form ring to correct size. Using Seal Installer (09631-00170 ), install oil seal in housing. Coat seal with ATF. Install NEW Teflon rings on power piston.
  3. Using ring compressor, compress Teflon rings on power piston for 5-7 minutes. Remove ring compressor. Install worm gear valve body assembly in housing. Tighten bolts to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Tighten adjusting screw. Rotate worm shaft completely in both directions.
  4. Place INCH lb. torque wrench and Adapter (09616-00010 ) on worm shaft. Rotate shaft and note starting torque. Replace worm gear assembly if starting torque is not 2.6-4.8 INCH lbs. (.3-.5 N.m). DO NOT  allow power piston to rotate while checking starting torque.
  5. Install plunger, plunger guide, spring, "O" ring and plunger guide nut. Tighten guide nut to specification. Refer to the appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  6. Center power piston in housing. Install end cover and "O" ring on sector shaft. Install sector shaft so center tooth aligns with power piston. Ensure sector shaft adjusting screw is fully loosened. Tighten end cover bolts to specification.
  7. Rotate worm shaft from side to side, and place in center position. Place INCH lb. torque wrench and Adapter (09631-00010 ) on worm shaft. Rotate worm shaft and note rotating torque.
  8. Tighten sector shaft adjusting screw while rotating worm shaft to obtain preload reading of 1.7-3.5 INCH lbs. (.2-.4 N.m) more than reading obtained in step 4). Install new washer and nut on sector shaft adjusting screw. Tighten lock nut while holding adjusting nut.
  9. Check starting torque on worm shaft. Total starting preload should be 4.3-8.3 INCH lbs. (.5-.9 N.m). Install solenoid valve and "O" ring (if equipped).
