Ignition Coil Secondary Resistance Check

  1. On Corolla and Tercel, using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between coil positive terminal and coil tower. See Fig 1.
  2. If resistance is not within specification, replace ignition coil. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is within specification, proceed to Pick-up Coil Resistance test.
  3. On Pickup, measure resistance between positive (Brown wire) and high-tension (coil) terminal. See Fig 2. If resistance is not within specification, replace ignition coil. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is within specification, proceed to next step.
  4. Measure coil insulation resistance between positive (Brown wire) and ignitor body ground ("GND"). See Fig 3. Ohmmeter should read infinity. If ohmmeter does not read infinity, replace ignition coil. If ohmmeter reading is okay, go to:
IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE

Application (1) Primary Ohms (1) Secondary Ohms
Corolla 1.3-1.5 10,200-13,800
Tercel .40-.50 10,200-13,800
Pickup .40-.50 8500-11,500
(1) Check at room temperature.
