Differential Final Assembly

  1. Remove drive pinion rear bearing. Install new bearing spacer. Using Installer (09612-22011) and press, press on bearing until threaded portion is protruding .12" (3 mm). Apply gear oil to threaded portion of drive pinion. Using Pinion Lock Nut Wrench (09564-16010) and Pinion Holder (09556-16010), tighten lock nut to 188 ft. lbs. (255 N.m).
  2. Apply gear oil to drive pinion bearing. Using pinion holder, snug down bearing by turning drive pinion back and forth several times. Using pinion holder and torque wrench, measure drive pinion preload. Preload for new bearings is 4.3-8.7 INCH lbs. (.5-1.0 N.m). Preload for used bearings is 2.6-4.3 INCH lbs. (.3-.5 N.m).
  3. If preload is excessive, replace spacer. If insufficient, increase tightening 5-10 degrees at a time and remeasure each time until proper preload is obtained. If preload is insufficient even after 188 ft. lbs. (255 N.m) is exceeded, loosen nut and tighten to 268 ft. lbs. (364 N.m). If preload is still not correct, replace spacer.
  4. Stake drive pinion lock nut. Using Installer (09223-46011) and hammer, install new differential carrier oil seal. Ensure distance "A" is .331-.354" (8.4-9.0 mm). See Fig 1.
  5. Install differential carrier cover and gasket. Tighten bolts to 108 INCH lbs. (13 N.m). Install oil reservoir. Place a new "O" ring on transaxle case groove. Install new gasket on transaxle case. Assemble differential carrier and transmission. Tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
