Ignition Timing

CAUTION: Do not allow tachometer terminal to become grounded. This can damage igniter and/or coil.

  1. Engine must be at operating temperature. Connect tachometer and timing light to engine. Connect test probe of tachometer to negative (-) terminal of coil, or remove rubber cap and connect probe to service connector on distributor (if equipped). Adjust idle speed to specifications.
  2. On Pickup with carburetor, leave both vacuum hoses connected.
    IGNITION TIMING (DEGREES BTDC@RPM)

    Application Timing: Vac. Plugged Timing: Vac. Connected
    Celica, Pickup & 4Runner (EFI) 5°@950 N/A
    Pickup (Carb.) 0°@950 12°@950
  3. On Celica, Pickup & 4Runner models with EFI, short across the service connector (near firewall) terminals T and E, with (Green Black/Brown, Green Red/Brown, or Green Yellow/Brown) colored wires.
  4. On carbureted engines (Pickup), disconnect and plug both distributor vacuum lines. On all models, adjust timing by turning distributor.
