Ignition Timing
CAUTION:
Do not allow tachometer terminal to become grounded. This can damage igniter and/or coil.
- Engine must be at operating temperature. Connect tachometer and timing light to engine. Connect test probe of tachometer to negative (-) terminal of coil, or remove rubber cap and connect probe to service connector on distributor (if equipped). Adjust idle speed to specifications.
- On Pickup with carburetor, leave both vacuum hoses connected.IGNITION TIMING (DEGREES BTDC@RPM)
Application Timing: Vac. Plugged Timing: Vac. Connected Celica, Pickup & 4Runner (EFI) 5°@950 N/A Pickup (Carb.) 0°@950 12°@950 - On Celica, Pickup & 4Runner models with EFI, short across the service connector (near firewall) terminals T and E, with (Green Black/Brown, Green Red/Brown, or Green Yellow/Brown) colored wires.
- On carbureted engines (Pickup), disconnect and plug both distributor vacuum lines. On all models, adjust timing by turning distributor.
