Injection Pump Timing
- Remove injection pump distribution head plug and install plunger stroke measuring tool (SST 09275 54010) with dial indicator attached. See Fig 1. Using a wrench, rotate crankshaft to position No. 1 or No. 4 cylinder at 25-30° BTDC (45° BTDC on Pickup) of compression stroke.
- Using a screwdriver, rotate the cold start lever counterclockwise about 20°. Insert a .33-.39" (8.5-10.0 mm) thick metal block between cold start lever and thermo-wax plunger. See Fig 2.
- Set dial indicator at zero and ensure indicator remains at zero while rotating crankshaft slightly to left and right. Using a wrench, slowly rotate crankshaft until No. 1 or No. 4 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Read dial indicator and record plunger stroke.
- To adjust plunger stroke, loosen all fuel injection lines on injection pump and injection pump mounting bolts. If plunger stroke is less than specified, rotate pump toward engine. If plunger stroke is greater than specified, rotate pump away from engine. Tighten injection pump mounting bolts and recheck plunger stroke.
- Tighten all fuel lines and remove metal block, measuring tool, and dial indicator. Using a new gasket, reinstall injection pump distributive head plug. Start engine and check for leaks.
