Rear Drive Unit Assembly - Electric Oil Pump, Tesla - Remove And Replace: Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See RAISE VEHICLE - 2 STANDS .
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Disconnect the LV battery power. See LV BATTERY - LI-ION - DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  4. Remove the rear aero shield panel. See REAR UNDERTRAY AND DIFFUSER - MODEL 3/Y, REAR AERO SHIELD - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  5. Disconnect the oil pump connector.

  6. Position the oil drain under the oil filter area, and then remove the oil filter from the drive unit.

  7. Remove the bolts (x2) that secures the oil pump.

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 4 in extension
    • Socket 3/8 in Dr EPL10
    • 1/4 in to 3/8 in adapter
    • Torque wrench with angle measurement

  8. Remove the oil pump assembly and allow the fluid to drain.
    NOTE: Use the rear drive unit casting as leverage to loosen the oil pump and then pull the oil pump away.
    Drain the oil until only slow drips exit the oil pump housing.

  9. Remove the fill plug from the rear drive unit, and wait for 10 minutes for the oil to naturally flow out until it reaches the droplet state.
  10. Inspect the 3 O-rings on the removed oil pump, the O-ring on the removed fill plug, and the seal on the removed oil filter. Make sure that no O-ring or seal is left in the housing or damaged.
    NOTE: Replace all damaged components.
