RHD Steering - Steering Rack and Lower Column - Steering Gear and Lower Column - Steering Gear Assembly (RR) - Remove And Replace: Install

  1. Loosen the jamb nuts to the RH and the LH tie rod ends on the new steering gear assembly.

    80 N.m (59.0 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Combination wrench 12pt 21 mm
    • Combination wrench 12pt 14 mm
    • Wheel Alignment Torque Wrench Kit

  2. Rotate the tie rod counter clockwise to remove the LH and the RH outer tie rod ends from the new steering gear assembly.

  3. With assistance, fully disperse the pressure of the steering rack to the LH side.

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Combination 12pt 15 mm wrench

  4. Position the LH side of the steering gear assembly into the underhood storage area, and then slide the RH side into the vehicle. Position the steering rack so that the bolt holes are aligned.

  5. Loosely install the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  6. Install the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

    47 N.m (34.7 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 11 in extension
    • 15 mm socket

  7. Tighten the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

    75 N.m (55.3 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 6 in extension
    • 18 mm socket
    • 3 in extension

  8. Decompress the LH tie rod end from the steering gear, and then verify both LH and RH tie rod ends are as evenly distributed as possible.
    NOTE: Turn the shaft counterclockwise using open end wrench.
  9. Rotate the RH tie rod end clockwise with the exact number of turns noted during removal to install it to the steering gear assembly.

  10. Rotate the LH tie rod end clockwise with the exact number of turns noted during removal to install it to the steering gear assembly.

  11. Install the new nuts (x2) that attach the LH and the RH front tie rod ends to the LH and the RH front suspension knuckles to install the both tie rod ends to the knuckles.

    180 N.m (132.7 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Cordless 1/2 in Dr Impact
    • 22 mm deep socket
    • 1/2 in to 3/4 in adapter - 1717365-00-A
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  12. Tighten the jamb nuts (x2) to the LH and the RH outer tie rod ends.

    80 N.m (59.0 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Combination wrench 12pt 21 mm
    • Combination wrench 12pt 14 mm
    • Wheel Alignment Torque Wrench Kit

  13. Slide the electric steering column downward to install it to the steering gear assembly.

  14. Install the bolt that attaches the steering gear assembly to the electric steering column.

    18 N.m (13.3 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 13 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  15. Connect the steering gear assembly connectors (x4).

  16. Install the clip that secures the radiator outlet hose to the vehicle.

  17. Install the clip and the connector that attach the front drive unit front subframe harness to the vehicle.

  18. Raise the vehicle fully and lower the lift onto locks.
    CAUTION: Make sure there is an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise the vehicle may tilt to one side.
    Make sure that the doors are clear of surrounding objects.
  19. Install the cooling fan module. See FAN AND RADIATOR - COOLING FAN MODULE - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  20. Install the front fascia. See FRONT BUMPER FASCIA - FASCIA ASSEMBLY - FRONT - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  21. Install the front wheels. See WHEEL ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
  22. Reinstall the vehicle firmware. See SOFTWARE REINSTALL - TOUCHSCREEN .
  23. Remove the steering wheel holder.

  24. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  25. Remove the lift arms from below the vehicle.
  26. Perform the four-wheel alignment check. See FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK (NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED) .
