Rear Drive Unit Assembly - Assembly, Cover, Phase Out, 3DU - Remove And Replace: Install

  1. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the phase out cover to the rear drive unit.

    14 N.m (10.3 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 10 mm deep socket
    • 4 in extension
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  2. Perform the inverter air leak test. See INVERTER AIR LEAK TEST (INSPECTION) .
  3. Stick a new label to the phase out cover.

  4. Fully raise the handle on the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit.
  5. Install the HV connector special tool onto the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit.

  6. Use both hands to firmly connect the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit.
    CAUTION: Make sure that the connector fits the header squarely and tightly, and that both retention pins enter the handle.
  7. Remove the HV connector special tool from the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit.
  8. While pressing the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit, fully lower the handle.
    CAUTION: Make sure that the handle does not bind as it is lowered.

  9. Slide the release to lock the electrical connector that attaches the rear drive unit HV harness to the rear drive unit in the secured position.

  10. Verify that the electrical connector is fully seated, and compare both sides of the connector that it is properly secured in place.
    NOTE: An improperly seated connector might lead to connector damage and rear drive unit problems later on.
  11. Repeat step  3 through step  9 on the other side of the rear drive unit HV harness.
  12. Install the nut that attaches the HV battery to rear drive unit harness bracket to the HV battery.

    10 N.m (7.4 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 10 mm socket
    • Cordless hex driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  13. Install the bolt that attaches the HV battery to rear drive unit harness bracket to the rear drive unit inverter.

    6 N.m (4.4 lbs-ft) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 10 mm socket
    • Cordless hex driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  14. Install the rear HV battery skid plate. See HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY ASSEMBLY - SKID PLATE, REAR, ECOAT, ENCLOSURE - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  15. Install the rear aero shield panel. See REAR UNDERTRAY AND DIFFUSER - MODEL 3/Y, REAR AERO SHIELD - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  16. Install the 2nd row lower seat cushion. See 2ND ROW SEAT ASSEMBLIES - 2ND ROW SEAT CUSHION - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  17. Connect the LV power. See LV BATTERY - LI-ION - DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  18. Install the rear underhood apron. See UNDERHOOD TRIM - REAR APRON ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  19. Remove the vehicle from the 2 post lift. See RAISE VEHICLE - 2 STANDS .
