Steering Column (LHD) (Structural Pack) Remove and Replace: Install

  1. Record the part number of the replacement steering column to be used later in the procedure when the gateway configuration is set.
  2. Slide the lower shaft as far as possible into the steering column.

  3. Position the intermediate shaft of the steering column through the opening in the instrument panel.
    NOTE: Clear the lower shaft through the bulk head while supporting the front side of the steering column up towards the roof of the vehicle. Slightly pull the instrument panel surrounding the steering column for clearance.

  4. Install the nuts that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.

    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

  5. Connect the electrical harness on the steering column connector.

  6. With assistance, slide the steering column intermediate shaft downward and on the steering gear input shaft, making sure the shaft is aligned and fully seated.

  7. Install the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.

    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 13 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  8. Install the steering column boot on the bulkhead, as shown.

  9. Install the instrument panel carrier. See IP CARRIER - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
    NOTE: Follow all steps in the Installation section of the referenced procedure.
  10. Install the underhood storage unit. See UNDERHOOD STORAGE UNIT (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  11. Install the rear underhood apron. See UNDERHOOD APRON - REAR (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  12. Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle. See TOOLBOX 3 - CONNECT AND DISCONNECT .
  13. Use the replacement steering column part number recorded earlier and this table to determine the type of steering column installed.

    NOTE: If the part number is not listed in the table:
    • Part numbers xxxxx1x-yy-z are configuration value "BOSCH"
    • Part numbers xxxxx7x-yy-z are configuration value "JE"
  14. In Toolbox, click Dashboards > Infotainment Dashboard, click the Vehicle Configuration tab, scroll to steeringColumnMotorType, from the drop down menu to the right, select "BOSCH" or "JE" according to the above table, and then click Apply Changes.

  15. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, in the search fiield type "Column", click PROC_STEERING_COLUMN_CALIBRATION, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  16. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox from the vehicle. See TOOLBOX 3 - CONNECT AND DISCONNECT .
  17. Restore the driver and front passenger seats back to their original position.
  18. Restore the steering column back to its original position.
  19. Raise both front windows and close both front doors.
