Steering Column (LHD) - Remove And Replace: Install

  1. Record the part number of the replacement steering column to be used later in the procedure when the gateway configuartion is set.
  2. With the help of an assistant, carefully move the intermediate shaft of the steering column through the opening in the instrument panel carrier, rotate the steering column to the right so that the rear motor lower portion clears the instrument panel carrier opening, and then rotate left.

  3. Raise the upper portion of the steering column up toward the roof, pull down on the instrument panel carrier under the steering column to create space for the rear motor of the steering column to pass under the cross car beam, carefully move the steering column in toward the front of the vehicle and up onto the stud of the cross car beam.
    NOTE: Make sure that the intermediate shaft sleeves enter the bulk head.

  4. Install the nuts that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.

    15 N.m (11.1 lbs-ft)

  5. Connect the electrical harness on the steering column connector.

  6. Install the Instrument panel harness clip.

  7. Remove the masking tape around the steering column assembly.

  8. Install the lower steering column gap hider. See GAP HIDER - STEERING COLUMN - LOWER (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  9. Install the steering column control module. See MODULE - STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  10. Install the LH and RH air wave bezel caps. See END CAP - AIR WAVE - LH (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  11. Install the LH and RH mid A-pillar trim. See TRIM - A-PILLAR - MIDDLE - LH (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  12. Install the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace). See END CAP - INSTRUMENT PANEL - LH (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  13. Install the steering wheel from the steering column. See STEERING WHEEL (REMOVE AND INSTALL) .
  14. Install the driver airbag. See AIRBAG - DRIVER (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  15. Install the driver knee airbag. See AIRBAG - KNEE - DRIVER (REMOVE AND INSTALL) .
  16. With assistance, slide the steering column intermediate shaft downward and on the steering gear input shaft, making sure the shaft is aligned and fully seated.

  17. Install the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.

    18 N.m (13.3 lbs-ft) 

    Tip:

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 13 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  18. Install the steering column boot on the bulkhead, as shown.

  19. Connect 12V power. See 12V/LV POWER (DISCONNECT AND CONNECT) .
  20. Install the underhood storage unit. See UNDERHOOD STORAGE UNIT (REMOVE AND REPLACE)
  21. Install the rear underhood apron. See UNDERHOOD APRON - REAR (REMOVE AND REPLACE)
  22. Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle. See TOOLBOX 3 - CONNECT AND DISCONNECT
  23. Use the replacement steering column part number recorded earlier and this table to determine the type of steering column installed.

    NOTE: If the part number is not listed in the table:
    • Part numbers xxxxx1x-yy-z are configuration value "BOSCH"
    • Part numbers xxxxx7x-yy-z are configuration value "JE"
  24. In Toolbox, click Dashboard > Infortainment Dashboard,  click the Vehicle Configuration  tab, scroll to steeringColumnMotorType  , from the drop down menu to the right, select "BOSCH"  or "JE"  according to the above table, and then click Apply Changes.

  25. In Toolbox, Click the Actions  tab, in the search field type "Column", click "PROC-VCLEFT_X_STEERING-COLUMN-CALIBRATION"  , and then click Run  , Allow the routine to complete.
  26. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle. See TOOLBOX 3 - CONNECT AND DISCONNECT
  27. Restore the driver and front passenger seats back to their original position.
  28. Restore the steering column back to its original position.
  29. Raise the front windows and close the doors.
