Subframe Assembly - Front - Remove And Install: Remove

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  2. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel (Remove and Install) .
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  4. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) .
  5. Set the steering wheel straight ahead.
  6. Place a protector sheet onto the driver seat, and then install the steering wheel lock.
  7. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  8. Remove the front fascia valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace) .
  9. Remove the front skid plate. See SKIDPLATE - FRONT (REMOVE AND REPLACE) .
  10. Slide the red locking tab, press the release, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the steering rack.

  11. Slide the red locking tabs, press the releases, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the EPAS CAN.

  12. Release the clips (x3) that attach the electrical harness to the front subframe, separate the electrical harness from the subframe, and then tuck it up and aside.

  13. Remove the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack input shaft.

    30 N.m (22.1 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 13 mm socket

  14. Slide the steering column intermediate shaft up and off of the steering rack input shaft.

  15. Disconnect the electrical harness from the LH front wheel speed sensor connector.

  16. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH ANC connection to the LH front knuckle, and then disconnect the electrical connector.
    NOTE: Route the electrical harness above the front stabilizer bar.

  17. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH front stabilizer bar link to the front stabilizer bar, and then remove the link from the stabilizer bar.

    70 N.m (51.6 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 15 mm socket
    • 5 mm hex
    NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5 mm hex wrench to prevent the LH link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.

  18. Remove the nut and bolt that attach the LH front active damper to the front lower aft link.

    140 N.m (103.2 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench

  19. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH aft link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the aft link from the knuckle.

    180 N.m (132.7 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket
    NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH aft link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.

  20. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH fore link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the fore link from the knuckle.

    180 N.m (132.7 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket
    NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH fore link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.

  21. Remove and discard the nyloc nut that attaches the LH tie rod to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the tie rod from the knuckle.

    102 N.m (75.2 ft-lbs) 

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • 21 mm socket

  22. Repeat step  21 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  23. Break loose the front subframe bolts, but do not remove the bolts at this time.
    NOTE: Torque specifications:
    Depending on the vehicle manufacture date, the bolts might be as follows:
    • Front-most bolts (16 mm or 18 mm):
      • M12 1.75 x 75 bolt (1063242-00-B) and M12 x 24 x 2.5 washer (1103852-00-A): 80 N.m
      • M12 1.75 x 115 bolt (1608611-00-C): 80 N.m
    • Middle bolts (18 mm): 80 N.m
    • Rear-most bolts (21 mm):
      • M14 2.0 x 58 bolt (1133941-00-C): 115 N.m
      • M14 2.0 x 67 bolt (1638540-00-A): 145 N.m

  24. Remove the rear-most subframe bolts with a battery-powered drill.
    NOTE: 21 mm: 115 N.m or 145 N.m

  25. Remove the forward-most bolts (x2) from the subframe fixture (1066521-00-A, 1657054-00-A).
    NOTE: The bolts will interfere with the subframe if they are not removed. Return the bolts to the subframe fixture when finished with this procedure.

  26. Move the subframe lifting tool to underneath the front subframe area.

  27. Connect the shop supply air to the subframe lifting tool.

  28. With the help of an assistant, raise the powertrain table and subframe fixture into position.
    NOTE: The lower aft links will rest on the fixture.

  29. Remove the remaining front subframe bolts with a battery-powered drill.
    NOTE: 16 mm or 18 mm: 80 N.m
    NOTE: Take note of fastener positions for installation.

  30. With the help of an assistant, carefully lower the front subframe from the body.
    NOTE: Hold the knuckles aside, and guide the active damper forks around suspension links.

  31. Disconnect the shop supply air from the subframe lifting tool.

  32. Move the subframe lifting tool and front subframe out from under the vehicle.
