Subframe Assembly - Front - Remove And Install: Remove
- Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
- Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) .
- Set the steering wheel straight ahead.
- Place a protector sheet onto the driver seat, and then install the steering wheel lock.
- Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See: WHEEL - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
- Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the front fascia valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the front skid plate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove And Replace) .
- Slide the red locking tab, press the release, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the steering rack.
- Slide the red locking tabs, press the releases, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the EPAS CAN.
- Release the clips (x3) that attach the electrical harness to the front subframe, separate the electrical harness from the subframe, and then tuck it up and aside.
- Remove the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack input shaft.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- Slide the steering column intermediate shaft up and off of the steering rack input shaft.
- Remove the bolt that attaches the LH ANC sensor and damper bracket to the LH front active damper, remove the bracket from the damper, and hang the bracket from an S-Hook.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket
NOTE: Take note how the electrical harness is routed for installation later in this procedure. - Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH front stabilizer bar link to the front stabilizer bar, and then remove the link from the stabilizer bar.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 15 mm socket
- 5 mm hex
NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5mm hex wrench to prevent the LH link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut. - Remove the nut and bolt that attach the LH front active damper to the front lower aft link.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
- 21 mm combination wrench
- Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH aft link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the aft link from the knuckle.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 22 mm socket
- Torx T45 socket
NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH aft link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut. - Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH fore link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the fore link from the knuckle.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 22 mm socket
- Torx T45 socket
NOTE: To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH fore link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut. - Remove and discard the nyloc nut that attaches the LH tie rod to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the tie rod from the knuckle.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
- Repeat step 15 through step 20 for the RH side of the vehicle.
- Break loose the front, middle, and rear bolts (x6) of the front subframe, but do not remove the bolts at this time.NOTE: Note the characteristics of the bolt heads
- Front bolts - 16 mm or 18 mm heads
- Middle bolts (18 mm):
- Rear bolts - 21 mm heads
- Remove the rear bolts (x2) from the front subframe with a battery-powered drill.CAUTION: Note the length of the bolts, either 58 mm or 67 mm. This length will determine the torque spec.
- Remove the bolts (x2) from the short spar of the subframe fixture (1066521-00-A, 1657054-00-A).NOTE: The bolts will interfere with the subframe if they are not removed. Return the bolts to the subframe fixture when finished with this procedure.
- Move the subframe lifting tool to underneath the front subframe area.
- Connect the shop supply air to the subframe lifting tool.
- With the help of an assistant, raise the powertrain table and subframe fixture into position.NOTE: The lower aft links will rest on the fixture.
- Remove the front and middle bolts (x4) from the front subframe with a battery-powered drill.NOTE: Take note of bolt head size for installation later.
- Front bolts - 16 mm or 18 mm heads
- Middle bolts - 18 mm heads
- With the help of an assistant, carefully lower the front subframe from the body.NOTE: Hold the knuckles aside, and guide the active damper forks around suspension links.
- Disconnect the shop supply air from the subframe lifting tool.
- Move the subframe lifting tool and front subframe out from under the vehicle.
