Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (Dual Motor) (1st Generation) - Remove And Replace: Removal

NOTE: This procedure is for vehicles built before April 10, 2016. For vehicles built after April 10, 2016: See Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (Dual Motor) (2nd Generation) (Remove And Replace) .
  1. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  3. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install) .
  4. Remove the particulate filter. See Filter - Particulate (Remove and Replace) .
  5. Release the clips that attach the RH side of the cowl screen panel to the vehicle, and then lift the panel to access the particulate filter housing.

  6. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the particulate filter housing to the vehicle.

  7. Release the tabs that attach the particulate filter housing to the vehicle, and then remove the housing from the vehicle.

  8. Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  9. Locate the lower bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
    NOTE: The steering wheel might need to be turned for access to the lower bolt.
    NOTE: The lower bolt can be accessed between the 12V auxiliary battery and the vehicle frame.
    NOTE: Coolant hose might need to be moved for access to be lower bolt.
  10. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.

  11. Locate the upper bolt and the nut that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
    NOTE: The steering wheel might need to be turned for access to the upper bolt and the nut.

  12. Remove and discard the bolt and nut that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.

  13. Install the steering wheel holder on the steering wheel.
    NOTE: The steering wheel holder prevents damage to the clockspring during the removal of the lower intermediate steering column shaft.

  14. Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and off the steering rack input shaft.

  15. Slide down the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft to separate it from the upper intermediate shaft, and then remove the shaft from the vehicle.
