Mount - Front Drive Unit - LH (1st Generation) - Adjust

Last modified: 20/03/2020 13:56:39

This procedure is for vehicles built through April 24, 2019.

NOTE: Follow this procedure to adjust the LH drive unit mount when the RH mount has been replaced but the shim tools cannot be repositioned to verify proper clearance.

Special tools required for this procedure:

Supplier Part Number Description
Tesla 1056566-00-A Locating Shim Set, Front Motor
Tesla 1126496-00-B Wrench, Torque+Angle, 3/8" Dr
Tesla 1139297-00-A SKT, 3/8" DR, Low Profile, 15 mm
  1. Release the bolts (x2) that secure the 4-way valve bracket to the body.

  2. Raise the vehicle and remove the front LH wheel.
  3. Release the plastic rivets that secure the rear of the upper front arch liner and then pull the arch liner forward.
  4. Looking upward through the wheel well, inspect the rear of the LH drive unit mount. Note whether it has a backing plate that secures the nuts; this information will be used later in the procedure.

  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Lower the support jack approximately halfway.
  7. Position the LH strap:
NOTE: Work from the underhood area while an assistant works from the LH wheelwell.
    1. Slide the strap between the LH drive unit mount and the front drive unit.

    2. Have the assistant slide the strap inward, as close to the differential housing as possible.
CAUTION: Ensure that there are no coolant hoses between the strap and the front drive unit.
    3. Reach behind the front cross car beam and pull the strap up and over the top of the support jack.
    4. Secure the two ends of the strap with the carabiner.
    5. Slide the strap so that the carabiner is approximately 6 inches (150 mm) above the front cross car beam.
  8. Raise the support jack until the LH strap is completely taut.
  9. Loosen the adjustment bolts (x2) on the LH mount until the weight of the motor shifts onto the strap.
NOTE: If the LH drive unit mount does not have a backing plate, have an assistant use a 15 mm wrench to restrain the nuts on the rear of the drive unit mount while loosening the bolts.

    1. Working from the underhood area, loosen the forward upper bolt.
    2. Working from the underhood area, loosen the forward lower bolt.
    3. Working from the RH wheelwell, loosen the rear upper bolt.
    4. Working from the RH wheelwell, loosen the rear lower bolt.
  11. Working from the RH wheelwell, use a socket wrench with an extension to loosen the bolts (x2) that secure the mount to the body.

NOTE: The motor can now be moved to position the shim tools appropriately.
  12. Position the 3 shim tools in between the RH drive unit mount and body.
NOTE: These tools ensure proper clearance. Leave them in place until prompted to remove, after all drive unit mount bolts are fully torqued. Refer to  19.

Position the shim tools as follows:

    2. Position the hook shim tool between the mount and outer bushing.
    3. Position the straight shim tool between the mount and inner bushing.
  13. Working from the wheelwell, fully torque the bolts that secure the mount to the body (torque 120 N.m).
  14. Attach the 15 mm low profile socket to the torque + angle wrench.
  15. Set the torque + angle wrench to a torque value of 35 N.m.
  16. Tighten the bolts to the RH drive unit mount (torque 35 N.m) in the sequence shown:

  17. Set the torque + angle wrench to 75 degrees of angle and tighten the bolts to the correct torque angle in the same sequence.
  18. On the LH side drive unit mount, fully torque the adjustment bolts (x2) to 50 N.m.
  19. Remove the shim tools, then attempt to reinstall them:
    • If all 3 shim tools can be easily installed and removed, the motor is properly adjusted.
    • If the shim tools can not be easily installed and removed, repeat steps  9 through  18.
  20. Lower the support jack until the LH strap is loose.
  21. Remove the LH strap.
  22. Replace the bolts that secure the 4-way valve bracket to the body. Torque the bolts (x2) to XXX NEED TORQUE VALUE HERE.
