Steering Wheel and Column Construction

• Steering column is provided with the telescopic and tilt mechanism that allows step-less adjustment of whole steering column in up-and-down and back-and-forth directions.
• The steering column employs the collapsible mechanism to absorb shocks from primary and secondary impacts.
• The sliding part between the inner and outer lower shafts absorbs impact in the event of a frontal collision. This prevents steering wheel from thrusting toward the driver.

To ensure the energy absorbing action, it is important that only the specified screws, bolts and nuts be used as designated, and that they are tightened to their specified torques. When the steering column is removed from the vehicle, special care must be taken in handling it. Use of a steering wheel puller or giving a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft, leaning steering assembly against something, or dropping the assembly could deform energy absorption wires which maintain steering column length and position.
