Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0463 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0463 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Ensure gauge reads above empty. Add fuel if necessary. Go to next step.
  3. If not using scan tool, go to next step. If using scan tool, connect scan tool. Turn ignition on and using scan tool to check fuel level. If scan tool reads zero percent, go to step  5. If reading is not as specified, problem is probably intermittent. System may be okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  4. Measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and PCM 22-pin harness connector C23 terminal No. 11 (Yellow/Red wire). See Figure. If 9.4 volts or more are present, go to next step. If less than 9.4 volts are present, problem is probably intermittent. System may be okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel level sensor harness connector. See Figure. Using an ohmmeter, check for specified resistance between component side of fuel level sensor harness connector terminals No. 1 (Pink/Blue wire) and No. 2 (Black wire). See FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. Go to next step.
    FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Fuel Level Ohms
    Empty 100-123
    Half 36.1
    Full 1-10
  6. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel level sensor. If resistance is as specified, check for open in Yellow/Red wire between fuel level sensor, fuel gauge and PCM 22-pin connector C23 terminal No. 11. See Figure. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If wire is okay, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
