Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0118 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0118 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Select ECT parameter. If display reads -40°F (-40°C), go to next step. If display does not read -40°F (-40°C), problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0108, P0113, P0118, P0123 and P0450 are set, check for an open in Light Green/Black wire between PCM 16-pin connector C22 terminal No. 9 and ECT sensor connector terminal No. 3. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. If DTC P0108, P0113, P0118, P0123 and P0450 are not present and/or Light Green/Black wire is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ECT parameter. If parameter reads -40°F (-40°C), go to next step. If parameter does not read -40°F (-40°C), problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. ECT sensor is located in thermostat housing. Check for poor terminal contact at ECT sensor connector. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Light Green/Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step.
  6. If 4-6 volts are present, go to step  8. If 4-6 volts are not present, turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 16-pin connector C22. Check for poor terminal contact at PCM 16-pin connector C22. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, go to next step.
  7. Check for open or short to power in Green/White wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and PCM 16-pin harness connector C22 terminal No. 10. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If wire is okay, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  8. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper together ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green/White wire) and No. 3 (Light Green/Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Turn ignition on. If parameter on scan tool reads 246°F (119°C), replace ECT sensor and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If parameter is not 246°F (119°C), check for poor terminal contact at PCM 16-pin connector C22. Go to next step.
  9. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If terminal contact is okay, check for open in Light Green/Black wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM 16-pin harness connector C22 terminal No. 9. See Figure. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
