Throttle Position (TP) Sensor

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and TP sensor connector. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between indicated terminals. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR RESISTANCE  table.

    THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR RESISTANCE (1)

    Application Ohms
    Esteem & Swift
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 2 2500-6000
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 3 (2)(3) 100-20,000
    Vitara 1.6L & 2.0L
    Between Terminals 1 & 3 4000-6000
    Between Terminals 1 & 2 (2) 20-6000
    Grand Vitara
    Between Terminals No. 1 & 3 4000-6000
    Between Terminals No. 2 & 3 (2) 0-4600
    (1) See Fig 1 or Fig 2 for terminal identification.
    (2) Varies according to throttle position.
    (3) There should be more than 2000 ohms difference between idle and wide open throttle resistance.
  2. On Grand Vitara 2.5L, if resistance is not as specified, adjust TP sensor. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR - GRAND VITARA 2.5L V6 in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If resistance is not as specified after adjustment, replace TP sensor. For further diagnostic procedures, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
