Hydraulic System Pressure Test
- With engine off, disconnect pressure hose from pump. Install an oil pressure gauge between power steering pump and steering unit. See Fig 1 .
- Bleed system by holding gauge beneath fluid reservoir with shutoff valve open. With engine idling, check fluid level in reservoir. Refill reservoir if necessary.
- If steering system still malfunctions, start engine. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock several times until fluid temperature is 122-140°F (50-60°C).
- With steering wheel straight ahead, check pressure gauge. If gauge reads more than 142 psi (10.0 kg/cm2
), check flow control valve, pressure hoses and pipes for restrictions.CAUTION: DO NOT leave shutoff valve closed longer than 10 seconds or pump may be damaged.
- Slowly close pressure gauge valve while watching gauge. If fluid pressure is more than 1137 psi (80 kg/cm2 ) or less than 853 psi (60 kg/cm2 ), inspect relief pressure valve, pressure hose and pipes for restrictions. Open pressure gauge valve.
- Hold engine speed at 1500 RPM and check pressure gauge reading. If pressure reading is less than 853 psi (60 kg/cm2 ), replace power steering gear.
