    (C) Transmission case
  4. Check the one-way clutch.
    1. Install the one-way clutch to the one-way clutch inner race.
    2. Check that when it is turned clockwise it is locked, whereas when it is turned counterclockwise it turns freely.

    3. If it turns freely when turned clockwise or if it is locked when turned counterclockwise, replace with a new one-way clutch.
  5. Check the front planetary gear.
    1. Measure the pinion gear thrust clearance using a thickness gauge.

      Specification:

      0.2 - 0.6 mm (0.01 - 0.02 in)

    2. Measure the front planetary gear inner diameter using a cylinder gauge.

      Specification:

      48.78 mm (1.920 in)

    3. If the value exceeds the specification, replace the front planetary gear with a new part.
  6. Remove the front planetary flange rear thrust bearing race, front planetary flange thrust needle roller bearing, and No. 2 planetary carrier thrust washer.

    (A) No. 1 brake flange
    (B) No. 1 brake disc
    (C) No. 1 brake plate
    (D) Transmission case
  9. Check the No. 1 brake flange, No. 1 brake discs, and No. 1 brake plates.
    1. Check for wear, damage, deformation, discoloration and seizure.
    2. Replace with a new part if defective.

    3. Stack the No. 1 brake flange (A), No. 1 brake disc (B), and No. 1 brake plate (C), and measure and record the thickness "T".
NOTE: Measure at four points at 90° intervals and calculate the average.

      Service limit:

      14.50 mm (0.571 in)

    4. If the value is equal to or less than the service limit, perform the following operations. 1) Replace with new No. 1 brake discs and new No. 1 brake plates, and perform the step  3 again to measure and record the thickness.

      Initial standard:

      14.50 - 15.54 mm (0.571 - 0.612 in)

  10. Check the piston stroke of No. 1 brake piston.
    1. Place the surface plate on a weight scale, and place the transmission case on the surface plate.
    2. Adjust the reading of the weight scale to the zero point.
    3. Place a weight so that the reading value of the weight scale becomes 0.5 kg (1.10 lb) or less. Then measure height "H" from the top of the No. 1 brake piston (A) to the mounting surface of the No. 1 brake flange (B).
      NOTE:
      • Measure at four points at 90° intervals and calculate the average.
      • If the value is outside the specification, check the No. 1 brake cylinder.

      Specification:

      15.27 - 15.92 mm (0.601 - 0.627 in)

G16525978Courtesy of SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
    4. Calculate the piston stroke "S" using the following formula.

      Specification:

      0.42 - 0.72 mm (0.017 - 0.028 in)

      S = H - T

      S Piston stroke mm (in)
H Measured value (mm (in)) of (2)
T Measured value (mm (in)) of step 8. (3)
    5. If the value exceeds the specification, adjust the thickness of the No. 1 brake flange so that the value is within the initial standard.

      Initial standard:

      14.50 - 15.54 mm (0.571 - 0.612 in)
