Adjust ATF Level

CAUTION:
  • Be sure to adjust the ATF level after switching to the [ATF level adjustment mode].
  • Be sure to adjust ATF level when the fluid temperature is appropriate for the fluid amount adjustment.
  • Perform procedures when ATF is sufficiently cool.
NOTE: Two methods are available for switching to the [ATF level adjustment mode].
  1. Prepare the ATF for refilling.
  2. Switch to [ATF level adjustment mode]. (When using the Subaru Select Monitor)
    1. Connect the Subaru Select Monitor.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON. (Engine OFF)
    3. Turn off all systems causing an electrical load, such as headlights, A/C, seat heater and rear defogger.
    4. On [Transmission Diagnosis] screen, select [Maintenance support].
    5. On [Maintenance support] screen, select [ATF level adjustment mode].
NOTE: If the ATF temperature is 42°C (108°F) or more, repeat the procedure from step  1 after lowering the ATF temperature by leaving the vehicle in a cool place.
    6. While checking the ATF temperature, raise the oil temperature by idling.
    7. Adjust the oil amount as soon as the oil reaches the appropriate temperature for the oil amount adjustment (42°C (108°F)).
Lower than proper oil temperature Proper oil temperature Higher than proper oil temperature
    Less than 43°C (109°F) 43 - 47°C (109 - 117°F) 48°C (118°F) or more
  3. Switch to [ATF level adjustment mode]. (When TC terminal is short-circuited)
    1. Short No. 13 and No. 4 of the data link connector.

    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn off all systems causing an electrical load, such as headlights, A/C, seat heater and rear defogger.
    4. Operate the select lever in P → R → N → D → M → D → N → R → P to circulate ATF in the transmission.
    5. Perform N ←→ D operation within 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more consecutively to switch to the [ATF level adjustment mode].

When the [ATF level adjustment mode] is activated, the upshifting possible indicator light [ ]/downshifting possible indicator light [ ] in the combination meter illuminate for 2 seconds and go off simultaneously regardless of the select lever position.

    6. After switching to [ATF level adjustment mode], shift the select lever to "P range".
    7. Release short in No. 13 and No. 4 of the data link connector.
    8. Check the illumination status of the upshifting possible indicator light [ ]/downshifting possible indicator light [ ].

Only when the downshifting possible indicator light [ ] illuminates, the work can be performed.

CAUTION: When the upshifting possible indicator light [ ] only turns on or when both upshifting possible indicator light [ ]/downshifting possible indicator light [ ] simultaneously turn on, stop the operation and leave the vehicle in a cool place to lower the ATF temperature, and then repeat the procedure from step  1.
    9. Adjust the oil amount as soon as the oil reaches the appropriate temperature for the oil amount adjustment.
CAUTION: Be sure to adjust ATF at the proper oil temperature.
Lower than proper oil temperature Proper oil temperature Higher than proper oil temperature
Only the downshifting possible indicator light [ ] illuminates The upshifting possible indicator light [ ] and the downshifting possible indicator light [ ] simultaneously turn on Only the upshifting possible indicator light [ ] illuminates
  4. With the engine idling, lift up the vehicle.
  5. Use a hexagon socket wrench (5 mm) to remove the overflow plug, and check the ATF level when the temperature is appropriate for oil amount check.
    NOTE:
    • The ATF amount is proper when ATF flows out of the overflow tube and then its flow is thin.
    • If ATF does not flow out of the overflow tube, fill the ATF through the refill plug hole.
  6. Use a hexagon socket wrench (5 mm) to install the overflow plug (B) with a new gasket.
    CAUTION:
    • If the work was performed using the Subaru Select Monitor, install the overflow plug while the ATF temperature is 43 - 47°C (109 - 117°F).
    • If the work was performed by shorting the TC terminal, install the overflow plug while the upshifting possible indicator light [ ] and the downshifting possible indicator light [ ] simultaneously illuminate.
