Chain Cover: Removal

NOTE: When replacing a single part, perform the work with the engine assembly installed to body.
  1. When working on the vehicle
    NOTE: When working on the vehicle, perform the following steps also.
    1. Remove the radiator and the condenser as an assembly.

      Gasoline engine model: 

      Ref. to COOLING (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>RADIATOR>REMOVAL .

      Hybrid model: 

      Ref. to COOLING (H4DO(HEV))>RADIATOR>REMOVAL .

    2. Remove the inverter front water pipe. (Hybrid model) Ref. to COOLING (H4DO(HEV))>INVERTER WATER PIPE>REMOVAL>INVERTER FRONT WATER PIPE .
  2. Drain the engine oil. Ref. to LUBRICATION (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>ENGINE OIL>REPLACEMENT .
  3. Remove the V-belt tensioner assembly. (Gasoline engine model) Ref. to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>V-BELT>REMOVAL>GASOLINE ENGINE MODEL>V-BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY .
  4. Remove the generator. (Gasoline engine model) Ref. to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>GENERATOR> REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the EGR cooler. (Hybrid model) Ref. to EMISSION CONTROL (AUX. EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES) (H4DO(HEV))>EGR COOLER>REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the compressor assembly.

    Gasoline engine model: 

    Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)>COMPRESSOR>REMOVAL .

    Hybrid model: 

    Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (HEV)>COMPRESSOR>REMOVAL .

  7. Remove the idler pulley. (2.5 L model and hybrid model)

    2.5 L model: 

    Ref. to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>V-BELT>REMOVAL>GASOLINE ENGINE MODEL>IDLER PULLEY .

    Hybrid model: 

    Ref. to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>V-BELT>REMOVAL>HYBRID MODEL>IDLER PULLEY .

  8. Remove the water pump pulley.

    Gasoline engine model: 

    Ref. to COOLING (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>WATER PUMP>REMOVAL>WATER PUMP PULLEY .

    Hybrid model: 

    Ref. to COOLING (H4DO(HEV))>WATER PUMP>REMOVAL>WATER PUMP PULLEY .

  9. Remove the crank pulley. Ref. to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>CRANK PULLEY>REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the bolts securing the engine wiring harness to the chain cover. (2.5 L model)

  11. Remove the connector (A) and connector (B).
  12. Remove the clip (C) and clip (D) (2.0 L gasoline engine model) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work.

  13. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the clip (B) securing the oil level switch harness. (Impreza model)
  14. Disconnect the terminal (C), connector (D), connector (EX) and connector (F). (Impreza model)
  15. Remove the clip (G) and clip (H) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work. (Impreza model)

  16. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the clip (B) securing the oil level switch harness. (Crosstrek 2.0 L model)
  17. Remove the rubber cap (C) from the oil pressure switch. (Crosstrek 2.0 L model)
  18. Disconnect the terminal (D), connector (EX), connector (F) and connector (G). (Crosstrek 2.0 L model)
  19. Remove the clip (H) and clip (I) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work. (Crosstrek 2.0 L model)

  20. Disconnect the connector (A) and disconnect the connector (B) from the chain cover. (2.5 L model)
  21. Remove the bracket (C) from the water pump. (2.5 L model)
    CAUTION: Do not remove the inlet engine coolant temperature sensor harness from the harness stay (C).
  22. Disconnect the connector (D) and remove the clip (EX) securing the oil level switch harness. (2.5 L model)
  23. Remove the rubber cap (F) from the oil pressure switch. (2.5 L model)
  24. Disconnect the terminal (G), connector (H), connector (I) and connector (J). (2.5 L model)
  25. Remove the clip (K) and clip (L) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work. (2.5 L model)

  26. Pull out the oil level gauge (A), and remove the oil level gauge guide (B) and crank pulley boss (C).

  27. Remove the bolts securing the chain cover to the engine.

  28. Expand the area shown in the figure using a crowbar or a similar tool wrapped in tape for protection, and remove the chain cover from the engine.
    CAUTION: The chain cover may contact the protrusion of cam sprocket sensor plate and cause damage. When removing the chain cover, move the chain cover horizontally until it cannot contact with the cam sprocket, and then remove it carefully.

  29. Remove the O-rings from cylinder head RH, cylinder head LH, cylinder block LH and the oil strainer.

  30. Remove the liquid gasket from the chain cover and engine unit.
  31. Remove the front oil seal from the chain cover.
