Electric Power Steering Gearbox: Installation

  1. Before installation, check the steering gearbox. Ref. to POWER ASSISTED SYSTEM (POWER STEERING)>Electric Power Steering Gearbox>INSPECTION .
  2. Install the steering gearbox assembly by tightening the bolts through the stiffener to the specified torque.
    CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to damage the steering gearbox assembly boot.
    • Since the steering gearbox assembly mounting bolt is applied with lubricant, always use a new bolt.

    Tightening torque: 

    60 N.m (6.1 kgf-m, 44.3 ft-lb)

  3. Install the main mounting bracket in the numerical order.
    1. Temporarily tighten the main mounting bracket in the numerical order.

      Tightening torque: 

      10 N.m (1 kgf-m, 7.4 ft-lb)

    2. Tighten the main mounting bracket in the numerical order.

      Tightening torque: 

      60 N.m (6.1 kgf-m, 44.3 ft-lb)

  4. Install the cradle. Ref. to FRONT SUSPENSION>Cradle>INSTALLATION .
  5. Install the universal joint assembly - steering. Ref. to POWER ASSISTED SYSTEM (POWER STEERING)>Universal Joint>INSTALLATION .
    CAUTION:
    • Install the cradle first before tightening the universal joint assembly - steering to avoid the steering effort from becoming heavy.
    • Be sure to follow the tightening order and tightening torque of the universal joint assembly - steering to avoid the steering effort from becoming heavy. After confirming that the steering column position is in the neutral position, tighten the universal joint assembly - steering.
    • Always place the tilt lever to the lock position after the steering column is adjusted.
  6. Connect the ground terminal to battery sensor. Ref. to REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>BATTERY .
  7. After adjusting toe-in and steering angle, tighten the lock nut on tie-rod end.
    CAUTION: When the wheel alignment has been adjusted, perform the following adjustment.
    • Lane keep assist learning value clear (model with EyeSight): Ref. to EyeSight (DIAGNOSTICS) >Clear Active Lane Keep System Learning Value>OPERATION .
    • VDC sensor midpoint setting mode: Ref. to VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL (VDC)>VDC Control Module and Hydraulic Control Unit (VDCCM&H/U)>ADJUSTMENT .

    Tightening torque: 

    85 N.m (8.7 kgf-m, 62.7 ft-lb)

    NOTE: When adjusting toe-in, hold the boot - steering gearbox as shown to prevent it from being rotated or twisted. If it becomes twisted, straighten it.
